anything to watch for in a used klx?
Hey All,
I've been reading up a bit on the KLX, sounds like a decent bike. I'm going to look at a used one tomorrow. Anything in particular to look out for with a used KLX. It sounds from the description like it's been well maintained. Stock except for a 2 Brothers pipe, mostly used for commuting and a little bit of woods riding, he just bought a different toy (Jeep) so he doesn't ride the bike so much any more. The only odd thing was that he said he didn't rejet after putting the pipe on, so it's obviously been running lean.
You've all posted a ton of info on this bike and I didn't see anything in particular to watch out for like for example how the early model DRZ's had cam chain tensioner problems. So I guess what I'm asking is, if there's any dirt out there on this lil beastie, fling it now!
Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback Eric.Sorry to hear that, it doesn't matter to youhow many of them run great if yours keeps giving you fits. Good luck getting it sorted out. I didn't buy, he was at one of the blue book value and I needed to be a little closer to the other. So I'm still looking.
It wasa nice bike though and he might be able to get what he needs for it. Part of his trouble is he's still got a large pay-down figure on his loan.
So is it the jetting that's still giving you trouble?

I don't own a KLX, but I did stay at a ...
From what I've read here, there aren't any systemmic issues with the bike. There doesn't seem to be a weak link that continually surfaces as a problem. So, from that perspective, there's no smoking gun to look for that I've seen written about. The bottom seems to have fallen out of the used market recently. Not sure if it's because there are more of these bikes in the market now or if it's because we're at the end of a model year or if it's a combination of both or something completely different. New 2006 models are selling in the low $4000 range. There's a new 2007 that's selling for $3,999 in Colorado right now. These are dealership-backed prices. Bikes with less than ~1,000 miles have gone in the $3,500 - $4,000, though this is slipping as the new bike market is slipping. Bikes with >1,000 miles seem to be in the $3,000 - $3,500 range.

Check out the air filter, if it's dirty it may not have been maintained and the valves can suffer as a result. If the filter is dirty and the bike is hard to start the valves may already be shot. IF that's the case give it a miss unless you get it real cheap and are prepaird to fix the head. Other than that bulletproof (except Eric's, sorry man)
