If it is a concern it may be against the law to remove it. Some places require it for registration.

Mine's been off ever since the 49 tooth rear sprocket.
It will probably go back on now with the 45.

Depends on what you're using to lube the chain. It's not just a safety feature, it also helps keep things cleaner.

That was the first thing to come off the bike, that and the seat strap.
