That really is the best way to determine which gas to run, try them all and see which grade does the best job for you.

It is not an exact science and everybody's bikes tuning, riding style and environment is different.

I also find a little difference in the way my bike runs depending one the brand of fuel I buy as well.

Quite frankly, Iwould like to know the real truth about this myself. I do know thatmy R1150R knows that there are leftover87 octane in those hoses. My R1150 pings like crazy unless I put 93 octane in it. If I go to a one hose station, it always pings.
This real world example carries a ton more weight with me than anything someone says or reads. Sounds like the one hose stations are only good if you always get 87 octane in your bike. Here in NC they all seem to be 3 hose pumps.

I was running regular all the time and thought I heard some pinging when it was hot out and working it in the slow tight stuff so I switched to mid grade. Been running that for a few thousand miles. Last month I put in a tank of regular and it ran like sh**. Sounded different, smelled different and lost quite a bit of oomph. Ran that all out in one day and refilled with midgrade and all was normal again. Wether it was truly the octane level, or just the pure quality of the fuel (could have been the bottom of the drum for all I know) it definitely did run different.
Yet another great Real World example! I think I'm Gonna switch to 89 from 87 for sure!

The 3 hose pumps are very hard to find in NY & CT. Luckily there is one a mile from my house. I only go there with my R1150R. The CBR, the KLX, and my car, I fill up anywhere.

you guys can do whatever you want but my klx pings on 87.....It's a very distinct sound. The 89 is ok until you want to really roll on the throttle on 5th or 6th gear.....the 93 works sweet.....I sometimes on rare occasion will here a knock but it's hard to tell at that point with this type of motor.......it's a thumper...they do have sounds that will startle a rider that never ran one of these motors. Also you guys can think what you want about the refineries but i'd take his word on the info he is posting. My dad has been a Steamfitter in local 420 for 32 years and i have been with him for a few jobs as well as being in the Valero refinery in Jersey for my own jobs and it's pretty much the same deal......they test religiously and the RON #'s are always higher on the loadout to the tanker than what the dispensing pump reads. Not sure if you guys ever looked but whover said the klx can run on 87 needs to have their head checked......The owners manual clearly states (as well as the tag on the right rear fender) the the fuel required is RON 91 minimum (Research Octane Number) for the motor....IMO that would mean 91 octane minimum for the bike.

RON are high, 87 is the average recommended.
