Another "Ticking" Engine Question
#11
Can the reed valve still make noise even if the reed valve cover is capped off? I am in no rush to remove the actual reed, but I will next time my tank is off if need be.
I currently have a rubber cap on it and it seems to be sealing well.
Just curious.
Thanks.

I mean revving up while standing still. I have not had a chance to actually road test it. I should get some free time soon, so hopefully I can do some real testing!

Videos aren't much use unless they can demonstrate where the noise is. Move in close around the engine with the video. Not perfect, but helps. I listened again and still sounds normal. There are gears meshing, cams tapping caps, valves seating in the head, piston slightly rocking front to back as clearance allows, even rings moving slightly in ring grooves. Lots going on, but sounds like mine.
Hope you get some riding time soon.

Well, I spent some time outside with a long screwdriver to see where all the various noises are coming from.
The cam chain and valves sound normal, but boy, does that compression release make a good amount of noise. The only thing other than the release that makes noise is something down low. Some sort of clack.
I am just going to put my earplugs in and not worry about it too much. If she blows she blows!

Release shouldn't make noise over around 800-1000 rpm, it's totally disengaged by then. You will hear a bit of clicking from the valves when listening close if cold.
Where "down low"? As a few of us said, your audio sounds good. I think you're overly sensitive, but better that than not. Just do the check, keep track, and don't get paranoid. I think the ear plugs and ride makes sense. Just pull them out and listen for new noise if any appear.
Now have some fun.

Thanks again for all the help.

the worse think is riding a bike for 7000 miles or more then all of a sudden hearing a weird noise
usually its something stupid like the license plate screws vibrating a little or some bracket making noise

Yeah, new noises are something different altogether! This bike is new to me, so that is why I am unsure of the sounds.

good thing you have the video
save it then one day if you have weird noises you can compare to the old video
could always take to a dealership or motorcycle shop that repairs bikes all the time
they may know right away if it has any strange noises may not cost you anything for them to listen to it
then if they do think its something you can always look up to see if you can handle the repairs or have someone do it
