Default Another KLX331S

Finished installing Kustom Kraft 331 kit in my bike tonight and it started right up. In all it took 6.5 hours (four yesterday and 2.5 today). It's dark and raining, so I'll have to wait to begin break in tomorrow. I up'ed the jets because I'm paranoid about KK's warning about it being too lean (this included going to a Q-0 needle jet in the Mikuni TM34). I let it warm up and first impressions are positive: gone is any stutter or hesitationwhen goosing the throttle and it isidling at a lower RPM than it used too.

I've got many mods in so far and there are a few left that are on my mind. Here's a list of the my mods:

Kustom Kraft 331cc big bore kit
Bill Blue Mikuni TM34 pumper carb (right now at #142.5 MJ, #40 PJ, tee handle fuel/air screw, Q-0 needle jet, needle 2nd pos from top) - probably will change
Muzzy full exhaust system
K&N Air filter/backfire screen removed/external crankcase breather/KDX snorkle
13T front sprocket
Pelican 1400 rear case
TrailTech Vapor tach/speedo/computer
O2 sensor in headpipe and K&N fuel/air meter
Kouba 1.125" lowering links
Rocky Mountain ATV bar risers
MSR handguards
Renthal handlebars
Renthal grips - modded throttle tube for optimum fit
RAM mounts for GPS and Pocket PC (used for map)
Marine grade 12V accessory outlet
De-smogged
Wolfman tank bag
Utah skid plate

The forest services roads aren't melted off yet, but will be soon -- I'm ready for some exploring.

Way to go! It will be a completely different (and better) bike than it was before. I do have a question for you, though. Where did you find out what needles to use (i.e. which ones taper more or less than stock)? Let us knowwhich one worked best.

I'm not using a different needle, it's a different needle jet. The stock size is a P-8, the next richer size is Q-0, which I now have installed.

I got the needle jet (Mikuni P/N 784-24111-Q-0 Needle Jet 640 Series -- Sudco P/N 003-701) and other jetsfrom http://www.cyclewareables.com

There doesn't seem to be a different needle, at least I couldn't find one. I haven't done any test rides yet with the Q-0, I'll post my results in the TM33 thread once I have them.

I understand now. I couldn't find different needles either - that's why I asked where you got your information. I'll watch for your results.

This fellow here has custom made needles: http://www.xt225.com/projects/mikuni.htm

The web page shows some interesting info on the Mikuni TM33 carb.

Dan, get ready to smile! You won't believe the difference in your bike when you ride it. I might mention that you will likely want to go back to the 14T countershaft sprocket. You'll be shifting gears like on a two stroke 125 MX bike with the lower gearing. And, as you will see, bottom end torque is there by the bucketfull.

I can't wait to hear your report. Way to go!

Maybe you can get a dyno run???

I'm smiling!

Did a mototune break in for 20 miles and promptly changed the oil.

Fiddled with the jetting some andI'm at the #40 PJ, #140 MJ, Q0 needle jet and needle at 3rd clip from top.Midrangefeels perfect.I'm getting some popping on deacceleration -- pulled thesnorkle and that helped a little bit. Noticed a stutter once at 3/4-WOT. Probably around 90% there on the jetting. May go tothe nextbigger pilot air jet (its supposed to effectively give you a half down on the PJ).

As for the power? Well, my mods have been gradual andI barely remember the bike in stock form. But now, rolling (no clutch, just open the throttle) wheelies in 1st and 2nd even though I haven't really gotten on it that hard.I found ashort country lane not too far from my house and its really easy to break traction up through 3rd (stock tire).

Cruising at 55mph in 6th, open the throttle andit pulls hard to red line. (Nothing like my 900 EliminatorI used to own though. Yeah, I modded that too).

Still have the 13T front sprocket, now that I see that the power is there, I'll probably put the stock 14T back on.

It's definitely a different animal now and I'm very pleased with the results. Worth it? If interested, see my opinion on money and bikes here: https://www.kawasakiforums.com/m_136528/tm.htm

I'm off to the mountains this weekend...

Cool MooreDan. You arelucky to have good places to ride near you too. I used to live in Cheyenne and rode mostly the Veedawoo area and some on Left Hand Canyon, Bald Mountain, and Berthoud.

Hey Mooredan, glad to hear that you like the mods you've done. I know the big-bore kit sure made my bike better.

Your jetting now is exactly the same as mine, and I've got that 3/4 throttle stutter too. If I pin the throttle wide open, the bike surges, so I figured it was leaning out. I just ordered a 142.5 and 145 main jet to richen things up. But now you've got me thinking. Was the 142.5 main jet too rich in your case?
