In simple terms, "octane" is a rating for the rate at which the fuel will burn. Higher octane fuel will "burn longer." Lower octane is a faster burn. As said above^, it's not really related to fuel "quality" or amount of oxygenation.
See what your spark plug tells you, as regards lean vs rich. I suspect it's running lean, but let your engine tell you; look at the evidence and don't assume.

NO. This is incorrect. Burn rates are essentially equal. Higher Octane rating refers to an air-fuel mixture which increases the combustion temperature of the fuel and reduces the proclivity to detonate. Octane is not related to burn rate.
