Air Box Mods
New to this site. I'm trying to find the sweet spot on my KLX, I have FMF full exhaust with powerbomb, DJ stage 2 ( 128 main ) and snorkel removed with UNI filter. Riding conditions;; elevation 1000ft. - 3500ft. and temps lows 45 degrees - highs 90+.. when riding to work..
Question; Which allows MORE air flow into box,,
Snorkel removed (like I have) OR WITH
KDX 200 snorkel installed

I'm gonna vote for no snorkle. More airflow, but more intake noise; it's a trade off. I run the same exhaust and jetting setup as you (plus similar weather and elevation, since I'm in Oregon too) and I'm running no snorkle and with an airbox lid drilled with extra holes for a little more air flow. I found the most power with no airbox lid at all, but the intake noise was more than I wanted to deal with (it rattled my eardrums even when wearing earplugs)

I agree that 'no snorkel' will probably flow more air than a KDX snorkel, but I'd recommend you experiment with your own set up. More is not more when it comes to air and intake tuning. Turbulence and velocity are more important than outright volume and each bike varies depending on factors such as filter, jetting, valve-timing, compression and exhaust system.

Thanks for the info, all 3 replies make sense. I'll try it with KDX snorkel as i think the air flow will alter and maybe I will get the best performance for the different riding conditions I encounter daily...........Thanks Guys..

Timely post...
I've been running with the airbox lid off and it runs pretty strong. You'll see in my sig line I run leaner than most (stock pilot, 124 main, DJ #2206 kit with clip 2nd position down). When the bike gets quite hot, and I try to blip the throttle in low-rpm 1st gear situation (Moab, climbing up the gnarlys), it would "hiccup" when the throttle was hit. But only when very hot (Vapor temp in the 205+F area, typically). I thought this was a lean condition and was planning on moving the clip to the 3rd position (even though the 3rd position seemed rich when I had it there before). Adjusting the Kouba screw in or out 1/2 turn didn't make any difference. But have been to lazy to get into the carb to change the clip.
So Friday, I cleaned the air filter, did other maintenance, and put the airbox lid on but without snorkel. Yesterday, we went riding. Freeway and slab for 15 miles first, and it seemed fair (and a little quieter), but with some surging when trying to hold a constant speed. But on the trail, it sucked. Terrible performance. No pull. Poor throttle response. Couldn't get past 9,300 rpm. Removed the lid after an hour, and she's back to her good-running self.
The point: as stated above...no one setting works best for all of us. Sometimes you'll have to fiddle around to see what works best with your bike and how and where you ride.
