Default Air Box Lid Removed = Safe ?

I know this must of been posted so many times.
I am actually about to remove it for my day of ridding in a few minutes and want to know..

What are the risks ?
Potential damage ?
Negatives ?
Anything to look out for ?
Can the bike overheat ?
Just remove the lid and thats all ?

It will run a bit leaner, which could be bad depending on how lean it is already running. It will be louder, and by that I mean louder at the airbox which to me was annoying.
There are some on here that run theirs this way.

I originally took mine off but replaced it sans snorkel for 2 reasons. First, I found no performance benefit to lid off vs lid on/no snorkel. Second, I hated that added intake noise.

If you take it off the bike WILL, I repeat WILL explode.

Okay not really, but you will have more intake grumble and a better throttle response (with the appropriate jetting of course) imo

Thanks Guy, here is my experience...
I removed the lid just before going ridding with a few buddies and when I started to ride the bike it was bogging / choking when the RPMs would get high in the gears. The throttle would cut out. I put the lid back on an it ran great.
What's up with that ?

More air is going through the engine without an increase of fuel = too lean.

Ride on

Yes you are supposed to rejet the carburetor. Don't ride it again unless you rejet or you risk burning a hole in the piston

Yes you should be good. Usually running too lean is a ticking time bomb. Riding too long and too hard too lean = kaboom! Some people it takes one full throttle run being too lean for their engine to blow. Not worth the risk, if you remove the box lid, rejet the carburetor.
