Acceptable helmet?

To be redundant to above...
Find one that fits. Find one that fits. repeat...Find one that fits!
They are different, as are our noggins. It should be snug. I've heard you shouldn't be able to chew gum without chewing your cheeks (snug around the jaw). Read up on how to fit, or find a pro to help.
I have an old Shoei from my street days. It was a darn nice helmet. Foam is worn now so it is just garage shelf material. I liked TNC's AFX37 so well I tried the newer 39 model...use it nearly every day for dirt or street, but the visor grabs wind at freeway speeds. Paid about $125.

"Look" isn't really the way to buy a helmet! I have 2 helmets I wear, one (modular, full-face) for the road, and one (full-face, MX-style) for off-road. The 2 serve very different purposes, while still serving the MAIN purpose (no, not "looking" good...) protecting my noggin.
IDRIDR - Don't tell me you can't find replacement foam for your old Shoei... I'm SURE they're available for a helmet like that!
I won't buy a helmet unless replacement parts are readily available. I just replaced the cheek pads on my old Zeus helmet! They tend to degrade over time, especially since it is my main snowmobiling helmet. I got medium pads for summer use, instead of the large pads I use in the winter. (I wanted a tighter fit, since I won't be wearing all the winter head coverings.) Anyway, even though Zeus isn't selling their helmets in the US anymore, I was STILL able to get replacement cheek pads and visor screws. That was a main criteria when I plopped down money on my new (One Industries) MX helmet.
Have to be able to get replacemet pads, liners, and hardware... I wouldn't consider a helmet otherwise.

since you are getting the sf....i wouldn't get a helmet with a visor if you plan on riding it on the freeway...

I will not be riding in on the interstate. Probably the fastest I'll go on it is 50-60 mph, just getting to and from work. I found a few I like from FLY, the Arai's are nice, but I'm not paying $500+ for a helmet. Sure, they offer a few more options than other helmets, but if I find a helmet that fits well, and is in a decent price range ($125-$200) and is DOT & SNELL approved, I believe it'll work just fine.

Hmmm. Never looked. This helmet dates from about 1987 and has plenty of hours on it. I remember well buying it...very broke college student with a few greenbacks in the pocket that went away. At that time, it was too expensive NOT to wear!

If you're on a budget, go to Tractor Supply and buy a DOT open face with visor snaps and either built in chin bar or breath guard snaps. Order a Moto-Peak visor and a Jofa mouth guard. Pure 70's retro look.
