351 Kit, Please!

If I had any problems with it.....you guys would be the first to hear about it.

I rode my XT to Utah and back last month. No problems except I got tired of running so slow and the ergos are a bit cramped on that bike. But I had a great time riding it in Moab and then thru some of the Colorado passes on the way back home; it's so easy to ride and I can pick it up when I drop it. The DR is a blast to ride on the highway but too much for me on trails. The KLX fits me perfectly and weighs much less than my 360lb DR. I was hoping a KLX351 geared up would manage the highway, I'd pack a smaller C/S sprocket for the trails. What do you all think? Thanks again.

Go for it.
Its not a bad compromise bike and the 351 kit should help.
The extra umph along with the other hop ups should also enable you to run the higher gearing as you suggest.
Most of us on here have not only upped the power, we have also lowered the gearing.
I'm thinking about doing a bit of touring on a dirt capable bike and the bike I'm considering is the DR.
If you were not on the other side of the world, we could swap bikes for a week to see how we go.
There is always the DRZ400?

Thanks, you two. I've looked and looked at the DRZ, but it's a heavier bike and there are so many who complain about that narrow gearbox. If you all completely scrapped my 351 idea I was planning to go back to the DRZ and look again.
Let me tell you I have nothing whatsoever bad to say about the DR650. Mine happily carried my butt and all my crap to Alaska and back last summer; the trip was 13,500 miles and we were gone a bit over 6 weeks. I highly recommend that bike, just wish it was lighter or I was younger, stronger, and more skilled. neilaction, you'd have a deal sure nuff if only you were in my neck of the woods.
I'm going to call Bill Blue and see if he'll share an opinion. I didn't want to pester him if this was a completely unrealistic notion. Thanks again and I'll holler back after I talk to Bill.

I had a klx with a 331 kit from Bill Blue- great quality - I would think the 351 would be more of the same-
My klx had the air box lid removed, fcr pumper carb, 331 kit, forustroke works header and slip on. After that I can say power was not a problem any more- and it could pull the stock counter shaft sprocket on the street no problem.
I ran mit ac-10 tires- great in the dirt but I did not like going over 65 mph with them- it felt loose. But the bike could pull 70-75- but i did not like it. I do believe it was the tires.
I now have a ktm 450- ( i do not like it at 75mph either). I do miss that klx!

Which is a buzz box on the highway...no sixth gear. My 300cc setup with 15T CS works great for the slab. I imagine the 351 would handle it even better. With the stock CS, your RPM would stil be kinda high though. I recommend going to a 15T in front.

Thanks very much. I figured the same thing and got that squared away with Roger (buddy with the bike) yesterday. I plan to have a 15T here by the time the BB kit arrives. Thanks again.
