351 cylinder crack
#44
Good service indeed. I'm a little sceptical about the reason given though.
The sleeve is essentially a tube, how can machining a steel tube incorrectly cause the horizontal crack? If the dimensions were incorrect then quality control should pick it up (if they have any), or during the sleeve fitting then Mr Blue would surely have measured it first.
Just my 2yen, for what it's worth I am a machinist by trade

Perhaps this is why Advanced fired that machinist...he didn't do his job correctly, which may have included QC.

Bill said that merrick was the only one who got a bad sleeve out of that run so I doubt that was the reason my original sleeve cracked. Although the machinist in my area told me that the reason my sleeve was cracked was because it was pressed too hard. I addressed Bill about this originally and he said that he would have to see it for himself to stand by it and that it's unlikely because he gets 25-50 of them done at a time. It makes more sense now that it could be a possibility since I am one of the newer 351ers.
Regardless, always appreciate a honest business man!

I of course take all blame for what happened with my bike, it was never an assembly question. This was something that was found after I had taken the bike to the mechanic, by the mechanic. He then took it to a local area machinist and the machinist told him that it looked like it had cracked from being pressed too hard. I only mention this because of Bill saying that Advanced fired their machinist. Although Bill did say that merrick got the only cylinder out of that bad run.
