A ride like that will seperate the hard core riders from the rest.

I was on a ride in Western Utah last year on ATV's, camping was not easy, but worth every minute. 1000+ miles in nine days. We camped a few nights than stayed in a Motel to clean up.

Two weeks after that I was in Canyon City, CO with some other friends riding the KLX for a week, we were on the Rainbow Trail and some others. We stayd at a friends house in Canyon City, at that time I only had 5 months total motorcycle riding experiance. Learned alot about rideing that week.

But seriously, on a long ride expect dificulties. You might try a weekend trip to see how everything rides on the bike. Share the load with others, one carries cookware, one carries tools, anouther carries the tent, and someone else carries a first aid kit. Double and triple check your machine. Have the route mapped out and what places along the way you can re supply.

Our trip to Utah each of the four machines had some sort of problem, flat tire in the first 60 miles, a loose battery cable on mine, 4WD not disengaging on one, and a CV joint poping, and a broke rack on the forth.

im about to do over a 1000 in four, maybe five days. 3500 is do able pending where your going , what you want to do, and what all you want to bring.

The road past Pickle Lake is pavement, may be a little rough, and the road to Windigo is good quality gravel. I would skip the knobbies, for a good touring tire. Motelling it all the way would save a lot of gear (weight).

Pickle lake has daylight for a long time during the June/July (16 to 17 hrs), so you can travel from Pickle Lake to Windigo, return to Pickle lake in one day.

I would prefer to take my Klr 650, but have a good trip, most important, have fun.

 

this trip is just is the very early planning stages, we may not take 11 across the top since it's so boring (driven it before) but thats just what google spat out

I get the small bike of the group, the others guys have a KLR and an F800 so I wanna see what our little bike is capable of. I was looking at the tank panniers but it sounds like they may be a good idea after all. As for gas, well, I've been eyeing up Bake's tank and hopefully someone comes up with a replacement main tank for the 09's.....if not some of the other guys are gonna be carrying my gas

At this point it looks like it's shaping up to be a cool trip so I'll keep you guys posted over the winter on what develops

 

I would not want to do a long road trip with a bunch of bigger bikes. On my 6 day trip I usually did 55 mph maybe 60 but I would not have wanted to run faster than that for a long period of time. It was a relaxing enjoyable speed. I would bet some of the guys on 800s are going to want to move out and go a lot faster than that.

 

Long trips are easily doable. Just stay as light as possible.
