331 w/CVK or 300 w/pumper?
I have been thinking about the future of my bike as it looks as if I will keep it, I'm a little psycho if you all haven't figured it out yet unless someone wants it before I put more money into it. But logic has set in and caused me to think of another alternative to the 331 kit. Can anyone elaborate on just going ahead and using the 300 cylinder I have and installing some sort of pumper carb in contrast to just the 331 kit and the oem carb? I think I read somewhere about this. Seems I remember a guy said he preferred the 300 kit and pumper to a 331 kit and oem carb. The 331 kit is $440. I already have the 300 cylinder and would just need a piston, rings, clips and gaskets. I think a pumper carb can be had for around $300 or so. I like to wheelie and the more reading I do, seems like a pumper carb really makes the front end light on a 250, let alone on a 300. Any input or advice is appreciated.

I still don't think all the mods will make it what you and I want...a wheelie machine! I don't even remember the guys who have done them saying that the bike will wheelie 3rd, 4th, 5th etc. I don't think I will go the big bore or pumper, but ride the bike moded how I have it for now and wait until I can get a WR450.

well, you may be surprised. 26 horse with a pumper carb and only 150lbs to carry around will be a very wheelie prone bike i'm thinking. the thing with the WR is it's not street legal and never will be. it's a sweet bike i agree. fyi, i can wheelie thru 3rd gear as my bike sits with just my mods. a 300 kit and pumper carb has to just make it that much better.

You say you can wheelie thru 3rd? Thats not a roll on wheelie on level ground is it? I see you have a 45 rear with the 13 front, did the 45 make a big difference for you? Ahhhhh I just noticed you weigh 150lbs, so mine would never do what yours does with my 200lbs on it.

With the money you would have to spend to have a 300I would spend a little more to have the 331. A pumper carb is definitelyworthwhile if you plan to keep the bike. Muchbetter throttle response and control while riding off road that puts a big smile on your face after riding with the CVK carb. I have an FCR35 on my 300 and am thinking about a 331. Going from the 250 to a 300 or 331 witha pumper carb will be a dramatic change. One thing to consider as well, if you ride much off road, is the suspension. Getting the suspension professionally done also makes a big difference with the KLX and would compliment the power upgrades.

That's a tough one. I've never ridden the 300 w/pumper, but I have ridden the 331 w/CVK carb and it was just fine. What the CVK lacks is a bit of throttle response, but it's not horrible. I honestly could be happy with the CVK + 331. The pumper gives it that instant snap and the raw squirt of fuel when you open the throttle makes sure the engine has what it needs to wind up.
I have both the 331 and pumper on my bike. If someone told me I had to give one up, I would give up the pumper. I wouldn't like it, but that is the choice I would make. Then I would save up and get my pumper carb back.

I would have to respectfully disagree with Nobrakes. I would have ditched the KLX by now and also be riding an orange bike without the FCR35 addition. The orange bike will come in a year or two. I ride almost exclusively off road andeven after proper jetting, the CVKis still horrible, IMO,for off road riding. A pumper carb makes the bike much more responsive and predictable which is what you need off road.I will say the CVK carb isfine if most of your riding is on road.

I will defer to you on this as I only had the CVK carb on long enough to break in my cylinder and take a few short rides. The FCR35 is truly a wonder, maybe even the 8th wonder of the world. If you possibly can, do both. You don't have to do it all at once, do one this spring, then the other late summer or fall, or even next year to spread out the costs.
