WR250R v. WR250F
The KLX I was looking at is a SF with knobby tires. I didn't realize that the SF is not really suited for mostly dirt riding. KLX250S in a 2012 model appear to be available but for $5,000 grand vs the $4,000 they want for the SF.
But I do have one more question on the WR's. Would a WR250F be better than
a WR250R or KLX250S, as far as a dirt bike - more snap and power? Would it still need mods? Sorry to keep beating this Yamaha horse, but I had an IT125 back in the day, and I'm kinda sentimental. But I do like my KLX w/mods too.

The WR250F is all Dirt bike, Yes more snap and power. Depends on what state you are in you can get a plate for it. They are very different bikes. Suspensions and motors are not the same.
