I know you wanted your second bike to be more dirt oriented, but I just picked up a new 2009 KLR and the KLX / KLR make a great pair. Your then free to dirt modify the KLX and you still have a road rideabe bike.

Well my very first bike that I still own that I no longer ride is a 1973Triumph Bonnie 750. My primary ride is a 1986 FLHTC, stroked with an S$S super E. Most don't expect a dresser to launch like a sport bike. I mean she doesn't even smooth out till she hits her 80mph cruise zone. You can then sit back in the barca-lounger and ride all day or into the night. So, the little KLX is my go to work, school, store bike. I can hit the woods and come out the drainage ditch behind the supermarket or jump off onto any trail with the klxsf. It replaced my tw200 big wheel that my p.o.s. stepson the marine stole and crashed while running from the police. I really like the extra m.p.h. the klx offers over the tw... and all of them have the same seat height within an inch. I'd go with a harley sportster and lace her with dp tires.

KTM 200 2 stroke. I'm really starting to miss the ring ding ding. my KLX is way too heavy in the woods. Overall I think the KLX will always be in the shed tho. Great easy to ride bike, but not a great dirtbike.

Just picked up a second bike a 2001 xr200r. It was a 150$ roller and I put an ATC200s engine in it, now I have a trail bike with a tractor motor. Good enough for those 3 min after work blasts through the woods and I can leave the street tires and 15t on the KLX for the slab.

Great thread!
David that's a sweet BMW with a lot of miles. Have you had to do much maintenance?

I went thru this as well. Bought and sold quite a few bikes to finally get where I am. It was hard to sell my modded DRZ but it had to be done. The KLX can do anything it can do (minus the crazy power it had), much lighter on tight trail riding, and cruises smoother at 55-60.
I wanted a more road friendly bike to get out on longer rides and ride with others with road bikes. Bought a cruiser for cheap and HATED it. Havent had one for years and couldn't/didn't want to get use to it. Had a Nighthawk and it was OK but it really performed best in the upper rpms and was not comfy for my knees and above 60 it felt like the wind was going to rip me off it.
Tried a buds 08 KLR and was really surprised how much I liked. Up until then I had only read how junky and heavy they were. A week late I bought my own.
Just went for a ride today and during the whole ride I kept thinking how much I really like this bike. It rides lighter than I ever thought it would on gravel and cruises nice.

The 2 bikes make a great pair FOR ME. I'm not a Kawi lover or hater, I just happen to end up with them for now.
