Dave
hes not using the compression, hes using the rebound of the spring to help pop the front up, the spring is already on its way up and giving it gas helps keep it going, it already has the upward momentum from the spring. alot of street riders do that....

Ah yes the ol can this bike wheelie question. Any one who has ridden anything with power to spare such as racing bikes, trail gremlins, sport four wheelers, or crotch rockets will be spoiled by flick of the wrist wheelies on demand. THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN ON THESE BIKES! However as others have stated; with practice (and uncorking the motor won't hurt) this little bike will stand up and walk on the back tire as long as you are willing. The key is the ever elusive BALANCE POINT. I can bring it up in 2nd and carry it through 4th,and have even had a few carry all the way to 5th wich is covering alot of ground. Once you find the balance point of your bike the only thing that will significantly affect it is the incline or decline (is that even a word) you are on. So have fun be careful , practice, and get that front tire off the ground

Oh by the way I have had longer more controlable wheelies with the stock gearing as opposed to dropping a tooth in the front.

I too have wondered about wheelies....but at my age and after a number of back operations I wont go into here I should not even be thinking about it. But still....wheelies are way cool when you keep the handle bars off the ground

Didn't I see somewhere a company that make a "box" that goes on the bike that retards the ignition when the bike goes beyond a certain angle? I think this is meant for 600cc and bigger street bikes but it's not a bad idea for smaller bikes if you are intent on doing wheelies.

My friend John was clocked at 120MPH doing a wheelie on his street bike and I was just watching him do them on is YZF250...I could ask him for some tips, but the reality is I need to keep MY fanny on two wheels

Here is one device....
http://wheelysafe.com/
"The WheelySafe device, on the other hand, is not a simple switch. The onboard high-performance microprocessor checks the state of the bike a thousand times a second to calculate whether an uncontrolled wheelie is about to happen. The engine power is only modulated when it needs to be, so if the wheel isn't going up there is no need to trigger, and if the wheelie is massively uncontrolled it can trigger earlier to prevent dangerous momentum from building up."

Also doing a search on "how to do a wheelie" in Yahoo or Google turns up a number of articles. Was just doing that myself the other day just for my own education.

Wow, that Shane Watts technique was impressive...
I'm gonna have to try that. He's pumping the brakes to sort of bounce the front end, and using the "up" intertia to assist in lofting the front. That, and some very skillful clutch/throttle control.
