250 or 300 ?
Don't plan on doing any street riding. Can't get any answers on the 300 forum. Is the 250 better for me. 6'3" 230 lbs. Haven't had a dirt bike in years. Is this bike hard to work on ? Sounds like you have to do mods right out of the box. I just want someone to recommend a good 4 stroke dirt bike, and not someone from a dealership.
Thanks

There is alot of factors you need to consider, does that mean you want strictly a dirt bike, not street legal at all? If so, get the kx450!!! what are you lookin for in a bike? Im 6'1" 225lbs and the 250 gets me around pretty good...

Weclome to the forum Branson,
The 300 is setup a little better for dirt riding. By that I mean it comes stock with lower gearing, stiffer suspension, 50cc's more displacement and does not have the smog crap required for the 250 to pass emisions.
However, I chose the 250 becuase it was street legal. It makes it easy to hit the trails and to jump on pavement in between.
I guess it depends what you're going to use it for. Most of my riding is dirt, but many of the dirt roads I ride are numbered roads which require a tag.

I'm not really planning on the street. I just can't get any info on the 300. I like that the 250 has a lot of fans, and that makes me feel better about it. I don't have enough property for a 450, and don't want to kill myself, just do some cruising on some trails and power lines. Nothing aggrssive.

Taking your comments in order:
Like Eric said, if you don't plan on doing any street, then you probably would be happier with a more powerful, dedicated dirt bike.
I weigh in at about 240 lbs., and this bike does everything I want it to do. I don't know the exact seat height, etc. for the 300, but you can dial that up and down with various suspension setup changes for free. It's just a matter of adjusting the preload and adjust the compression & rebound clickers. No cost, just time (about 5 minutes or less). At your weight (and mine), you really should have different springs all the way around the bike, but most of us get by with the stock springs. I only know of one guy that has changed them out. From what I hear, the new springs make a big difference, bug I am happy with what I have.
This bike is very forgiving. You will find that many of theguys on this forum arein exactly your same situation. A lot of us were away from bikes for 10-15 years and are using this bike to get us back into the game.
I can't imagine a bike that is easier to work on. Getting the carb out is a pain, as is getting the spark plug out if you have an aftermarket tank. Other than that, everything is very accessible. Combining that with the wealth of knowledge on this and other boards, this bike is easy for anyone (including me) to work on. Before this bike, I had never touch a tool to a motorcycle. With a little confidence and the info from this board, I have done all kinds of crazy stuff to this bike.
There are some things that you should do on day1 (or at least very soon). Some folks ride their bikes stock for a long time, butit's just so easy to unleash the beast on these bad boys, that you really owe it to yourself to plunk down 30 or 40 bucks for a few parts and do the free/cheap mods. The only mod that I have done that cost much was the Muzzy exhaust system. I am really glad I have the Muzzy, but I could have achieved very similar performance just by modifying the stock exhaust or by installing a used pipe from a KLX300. You can get these on Ebay for really cheap if you watch and wait.
Should you buy this bike. I don't have a clue. If you only want a dirt bike, then your decision is easy. There are a lot better dirt bikes out there. This bike is a compromise bike. It's really good at everything, but it's not great at anything. That's what I wanted in a bike, so it's perfect for me. If you want to feel it in the seat of your pants like the 2-strokes of your youth, then you will be disappointed in this bike.
I hope this has been of some help.

No, not at all. I just figured you were about 200. I guess I wouldn't hold a job guessing people's weight.

the 250 is a great bike, but if you were not going to do any street id probably get the 300, no catalytic converter in the exhaust, bigger bore, and its almost the same bike we all have...

RE: 250 or 300 ?
Thanks for all your replys. Sounds like the 250 will be good if I do some mods. I really like that it has a gauge package with tach. Also that you can put a kick starter on it. Sounds like that has been a problem for a few people getting them started in the cold. You never know, I might want to hoop on the road to get to a trail. If I was going to go strictly trail, what would be a good 4 stroke bike in the same price range, give or take some?
