Default 2018 KLX 250 supermoto conversion

Brand new to the forum. I have a couple questions about my 2018 KLX 250.

I would like to have a set of street and dirt wheel setups that are easy to swap out. Are the stock KLX300sm wheels backwards compatible with the 2018 KLX 250? Looks like it’s the cheaper option to get super Moto wheels vs stock hubs and warp 9 laced.

Also if I were to go this route I would like to use the stock 250 rear sprocket and stock front and rear brake rotors so it is a really quick change over. I’m not worried about going fast I would just do a 13T front sprocket in dirt mode and a 15T front sprocket in supermoto mode that way I don’t have to swap the chain.

Thanks for the feedback.

I did a second set of 21/18 with Shinko 705s and that setup in the twisties is a blast! Keeps right of with sport bikes and cruisers going within my comfort zone

I spent a lot of time figuring things when I was going to do my KLX650C as a supermoto. That's where I learned a lot about the hubs. Any pre-2009 wheels will have a front hub that is for a mechanical speedo drive. Amazingly enough most all KLX models 250 and up have similar rear hubs except the KLX650C which had a cush drive. Some MX models even used similar hubs.

From what I've seen I don't know about the earlier KLX300R models, but all the KLX250 models from 2009 up have the front hub set up for the electronic hub. Newer KLX300S and SM have the same hub as the 2009 and up 250s.. So those are compatible. Again, not sure about any of the R models for the front hub. So you need to have a 2009 and up KLX250 front hub for the electronic speedo unless you do something else for a speedo. If you didn't have the speedo drive being used, the KX front hubs that have no speedo drive machining would fit up, but then you have to deal with the speedo.

As for the rear hub, they've been pretty much the same since around maybe 1994. My 2009 has a KLX300R rear rotor (smaller diameter, changed out the caliper carrier to run it, a bolt on). Kawasaki used that hub on a lot of models, including some KX models. The ones I looked at on parts schematics I was looking at the spacer, bearing, and seal part numbers, which, if matching up, means the hub will very likely work. Hubs may have part number changes for small cosmetic changes in finish and I think some may have smaller or larger rear rotor bolts, which just means one may have to buy new bolts if not with the hub, or drill out rotor holes if slightly smaller. I think I remember doing the latter.

the expensive part will be getting the bigger front rotor as they aren't very common, if you are starting with the supermoto and building the 18/21 set. If you are doing the SM wheels you can simply run the smaller rotor. I will say the part change to run either larger or smaller rotors is the caliper carrier. The SM has a caliper carrier spacing that works for the large rotor, the S has one that works for the smaller rotor.

Thanks for the response. Does anybody know if a 2021 klx230 front hub would work on my 2018 klx 250, I found one for $50 in good shape? Looks like the rotor bolt pattern is different so you would have to buy the 230 rotor but would the Speedo work?

You can cross check parts using Partzilla click here One problem is if finish changes or color changes, then the part number changes, so it isn't all inclusive. From what I saw, there is no speedo drive on the front wheel. So the hub will not work with the 300 speedo drive. When it comes to disc rotors the diameter will have to match along with any offset. From what I saw, the same hub was used on all 250-300 from 2014 and up. Those would be exact fit. click here to see part and fit.

Yea I looked into more last night and I don’t think it will work with the speedo. A lot of the parts are the same, spacers, bearings, axle ect. But I think the hub end is flat on the 230 vs slots for the 250 Speedo. Thanks!
