Default 2009 KLX250s front sprocket

Not to start trouble for my first posts, but I have to disagree that the front sprocket is the same as the 06-07.

The 09 uses a lock washer in front of the sprocket...behind the nut. Not sure if the 06-07 models do?

Anyway, I ordered the 06-07 part and cannot fit the lockwasher back on. The sprocket width is greater than the stock one. It does go on the splines fine... but no washer fits.

I would prefer to not run without the lock washer, so guess I'll have to wait until they make a new part?

On my 06 I just used the stock lock washer. I have a sunstar sprocket though.

Which brand and part number did you get?

this sprocket does allow for the lockwasher togo on the splines. I was the one who was incorrect when Isaid it didn't go on them. After verifying mine, the washer was indeed on the shaft splines when I put it back together. I just wasn't paying enough attention to take a picture of that step. sorry

You also need to make sure you're doing the install correctly, ie. flattening out the washer before removing old sprocket and installing new sprocket. Nothing goes on the splines except the sprocket itself.
The stock washer on my bike (2009 KLX250s) is a true "lock" washer. The way it operates is that the inside of the washer matches the splines... and the outside has tabs that bend over the nut.

So you put the sprocket on, and then put the lock washer onto the last little bit of spline that is left. This keeps the washer from being able to rotate. Snug the nut up against the washer and bend a tab over. This makes EVERYTHING (sprocket, washer and nut) rotate at the same rpm.

If you do not have the washer on the splines... it is not doing anything. Both it and the nut can turn.

I got the MOOSE 13t that the MOOSE PDF says is for the 06-07 model years. I put the info in the other thread about this....

I didn't mean to start a second thread, but didn't want someone else doing what I did.

So we now have visual confirmation that the XR650L sprocket will fit... and the lockwasher will go back on... so that is the part I'll be ordering.

Seethis thread about part numbers ...
MOOSE 1212-0198

Of course man, If the washer wasn't "Held" by the splines, then the locking part would not work. I have lost all faith in your mechanical aptitude IG!

Aaah Gerry, your opinion of me meant so much too!! [&o]NOT!!!
I admitted I was wrong. If I had installed it incorrectly I could see your point but it was installed correctly.
