The first mod you should get is some experience. Dont ride fast. Dont be a squid. But welcome to the forum. Be safe. A jet kit is worth the while except for the loss of MPG. Driven's shifter is dope. I have fender mounted LED turn signal strips. PM for info on those. I have a big bore kit, its alot of fun just dont screw it up like me. HID kits are awesome if you know how to wire a a low/hi detup BUT, they can interfere with your coil or draw too much current. I have the SF but would love to throw a bunch of racks on it and tour it.

Welcome to the forums man! Take the MSF class even if its not required where you live. 13 tooth front sprocket might be a good choice, but as far as motor performance mods, I would hold off not only until the bike is broke in but after you gain some needed skills to stay alive out there. And finally stay close to the forums here. There are thousands of posts with a wealth of knowledge that you can take advantage of. We can help when problems come up. Take care and keep us informed. Tell us where you ride, and throw up a few pictures when you get a chance.

Hey Woods, I'm also from Jersey (north western) and I also love this bike on the tight trails... +1 for the MSF course. Even though i had woods riding experience they tought some great safety tips that are life savers in traffic, I took the one by Edison held at Rutgers, it was great.
I'm also curious about the LED strips! I'll PM another day
As for black Panels, several guys on here have used a plastic paint for theirs and it seems to wear well and look just fine especially for a trail bike. Thinking of doing it myself. I'm also hoping to switch out my Turn signals for pure LED's (no resistors) so that I can boost my headlight w/o over-doing the current draw.
Other than that, when I first started riding on the streets, I spent a couple months going out after 10 pm and getting comfy on the streets with less traffic, was super helpful in getting acclimated to street riding and feel before negotiating cell phone wielding super gulp drinking SUV monsters.
can't wait to come ride in the barrens!
