But I think if you're on a budget, the stated points about being able to buy (and modify if you wish) an 07 and start with the right suspension (which saves monies for power mods) is a pretty good assessment of how "I" would feel about it and even if I didn't want to mod, buying cheaper is just more money and the older ones are great bikes. I do really like the street aggressive looks of the 09' but I also prefer the simplicity of the 07 and actually like real gauges more than digital. You can find low mileage ones that are well cared for pretty easily it seems, in fact I think Deej is looking to sell his and I've heard it's never been dirty! j/k ... he's not looking to sell, but the dirty part might be true
Joking about a moderator? you're brave!

Thanks for the comments. BTW, is there a difference between a 2006 and 2007 ? or it's just the same.. sometimes there are few minor revisions.

As far as I know 07 and 06 are the same through and through, but I'm not an expert (yet) As for joking about deej's ultra clean bike ... he seems to have a great sense of humor in general and about himself so my trust is a compliment to his good sense of humor ... but I'll see if I still have an ID later today if he catches up on this

The 07 AUS bike is a KLX250R but I voted for the 07 anyway. Who needs less suspension travel and more weight on a dirt bike??

good points!

Plus, the 2006-07 is cheaper to buy because it's older. Still, I'm quite comfortable with the idea of buying a 3-4 years old motorcycle.

Thanks all for your answers!

Default 09

I bought an 09 last year and it is a very fun but very under powered bike stock. I have a jet kit and silencer on order. The power mods are a must and will run about $500. Today I got a smile and a blush from a cute girl on my way home, and that does not happen to me in the truck.
So anyway, fun bike, chicks dig it, and it goes about anywhere. That works for me.

I would buy another 06-07 any day, but the appearance changes and the shorter suspension of the '09 don't really do it for me. Just a matter of opinion though (I like the more 'old skool' look, it reminds of the KDX200) I think you'd be happy with either style. Find a clean used one and snag it!

Spacer removal & shorter links will bring the suspension back inline. Modern looks (after that fender gets lanced), transformer headlight, better wheels make the 09 a clean machine.

Then again the earlier klx with a ims tank & those stylin shrouds & a mx rear fender have that sweet moto thing going for it....

Its a toss up

2009!! Because the more people own them, the more IMS, Ascerbis, and Clark will see they have a larger pool of consumers to make bigger gas tanks for.

If you want to buy a bike and not have to accessorize and modify it, buy one 3 years old that's all scratched up and not previously owned by a kid. Let someone else pay for the farkles. The world abounds in $2000 bikes.

I'll provide a biased opine of an 06 owner that had similar goals when first purchasing the bike 4 years ago....and still flog her mercilessly.

Number one...buy used..just sayin.

If you are serious about the hare scrambles ... get a real dirt bike that is plate-able. The klx is a pig in hare scrambles..trust me, but it is rather comical to leave the plate on and actually ride it to the event and not trailer it.

However, the pig of a klx has really improved my tight sand skills....I can just fly on my friends ktm smokers now and actually keep up with them on the pig.

Don't over look the yammi 250 which was not available when I bought the klx.

If I had to do it over, I probably would get a ktm 300 xc-w smoker ..... but when I bought the klx, I did not know I was going to get a ktm adventure for my "street" riding.

Edit: One good thing about the pig of a klx is practically no maintenance .... the F'er can hum at 70 mph for a full tank of gas and then stay wot in 2nd in soft sugar sand for another tank in 90+ Florida heat .... and then take another tank at 70 mph to get home. All the while the radiator fan will never come on and you don't have to change the oil afterward.....actually that's the only reason I have not sold her.

Oh, if you decide to get a klx, get an 06-07....just for after market parts.
