1994 klx250r
I've tried and tried to find some information on this but I've had no luck, and I'm new to the forum and the Kawasaki world so if his isn't where this goes, please send me in the right direction! I normally ride quads and all I've ever owned is Honda on top of that, so I decided I would branch out a little and see what two wheels and a little green would do for me. I bought a 1994 Klx250r for pretty cheap. I've been riding and getting used to it and so far I've loved it, and I've had no issues with it. Until yesterday when the motor locked up. I'm also finding that there are hardly any parts out there for this bing anymore. Which I understand that, it is a 27 year old bike after all. My question is, I've been looking at the newer model klx250s, and the motor appears to be identical. Even the specs look exactly the same. Same displacement, same bore and stroke, a lot of similarities. I was wondering if a newer klx motor would bolt up on the older frame, or if the bottom end would interchange, as I've found quite a few for a pretty good price. I'm just trying to figure out what my options are, I don't want to scrap a bike not long after buying it! Thanks in advance!

The KLX250R morphed into the KLX300R. Engines between the 94-2014 KLX250/300 are very similar, although the 2006 and newer 250 has electric start and maybe some slight internal differences that I am not aware of. A good replacement would be a KLX300R engine since it also has kick start and no battery/charging system.
The general layout is, I believe, very similar to the KLX300R and the 2006-7 KLX250 in bodywork and general layout. The 250 changed up some in 2009.
I'd look into why the engine locked up. If the head is still good you have half the battle in hand. Hopefully it is a repairable situation what can be dealt with in a rebuild. If it dropped a valve/broke a cam chain, it would be interesting to source a Bill Blue 331 or 351 big bore and fix it up. If you can do the work it would be worth tearing it down and looking.

I just buy from a Kawasaki dealer I like. If none around you can always go on-line. Know what you want and need if doing on-line. Here is Kawasaki's site for information on parts.

Find what you want, record the number and contact a dealer or go on-line. Most mechanical parts will be easily attainable. Hard parts will be body parts and some exclusive to that time period, but not many critical ones.
