the '09 calls for 91 min. octane. on the sidepanel sticker; manual says 87 however.

Sorry but that's effin BS! I switched to 89 recently, and I think it might run better. Pulled the air filter, and that thing is super nasty and is probably the main culprit for engine stutter at 6th gear on the highway and not so great mpg. But still...what's the site say?

What's their excuse? Is this common in the motorcycle world? Yeah, I'd expect this from computer hardware manufacturers from Taiwan or something, but this is Kawasaki.

Bad day at work...

On topic: It's a DS bike. It's highly capable of a lot of things. Yeah, I kept up with the CRF's on the trail last weekend for the most part. They were all impressed. Then, I got to just ride home. No trailering, no fuel mixing, no maintenance (except standard oil, chain lube, etc.)

I'll say this though, the seat on the 09 SUCKS!! We need a fix ASAP! And I'm not talking about a $350 one either! I mean I am at the point of buying a gel mousepad or something and strapping that on.

OH, 98 octane. That may be why. I run 92-93.

Well with my DynoJet kit, I'm running the #128, 2.5 turns out, and if I don't flog it, I'll squeak out 70+ mpg all roads. But it doesn't take too many WOT runs and it falls way down. Trails drops it to crap (which is to be expected).

I wonder whats up with this stuff? You guys must be in stock gearing on straight stretches of road in high gear at low RPM for long periods of time. I have a good variance in everything. Open road, highway, city, trails, dirt roads.
I think you answered your own question. Trail riding absolutely kills MPG. All of our trails are still closed due to hurricane debris, so all I have to ride is gravel roads and around town. And yeah I'm running the stock gearing.

If you guys are getting anywhere close to 60mpg offroad your not pushing it hard enough. When we ride, we're lucky to get 25-30 mpg offroad.

Ive had so so many motorcycles in my life. Ive own sport 750s, even a highly modified 1000 Kaw. Ive owned real motocross bikes, and a few on/off road bikes. I knew when I was looking at bikes, after researching as I always do, this 09 KLX250s was my 1st choice. I was hoping I could find a KAW-Green one, instead of red, and I found it at my local dealer...cool. I know the bike ain't fast. I use it mainly for the street. The bike is great for a commuter, great for fun on weekends, fantastic on fuel, reliable (at least what I've read because its only got 600 miles on it thus far), and it looks great. The bike is not fast, not powerful, but exactly what I had expected. I really like it a lot, and is one of my favorite bikes I've owned in my life, (51 years old this year). I'm not just saying these things because I'm on this forum. Everyone should learn to do some detailed research when buying a motorcycle/car/truck. I've yet to go wrong reading and researching my purchases and my buying decisions. If I were to buy a high powered bike for the road, it would be an 08 Hayabusa, if I were to buy motard bike, I would buy the KTM 690, and if I were to buy an on/off road bike I would again buy a Kaw-GREEN 09 KLX250s. Really, I would.

On tightish trails, do you leave it in 2nd, and slip the clutch? I found 1st to be too low and jerky and I only switched to 1st when things got really hairy and I was nearly stopped and needed to power on out (usually up!)

I'm going the other way. I've had the hot bikes, and I'm settling down. Good clean, cheap, easy fun is the order of the day. I'm thinking an S and an SF. Maybe another Versys to go w/it, as my "travelling bike." KISS. That's the ticket. I grew weary of all the hype, mods, insurance costs, etc.
