Default 13t update

OK gents, I have 2150 miles on my 13t. After dirtin' this weekend, chain chirping was driving me crazy all the way home. Inspected the 13t and noticed it was worn quite a bit, It looked like 5000 miles of wear. So I have changed my gear set from 13/45(3.46) to 14/48(3.428). I am planning on 14/49(3.50) soon. The 48t hits the lower chain guide/guard if your less than #3 on the snail adjusters, so I had to add one more link to the chain. This also relieves the added wear on the rubber guide which sits on the swing arm. IMO the 13t is the best first mod, and the least expensive. As the budget allows, and parts wear out, think about the 14t and larger rear sprocket(longer chain) for long term use. If I can get a good pic of the 13t, I will post it tonight.

So I should just go ahead and get a larger rear sprocket then the front?? I am just gathering all the money to purchase all the mods at once. Sounds like you recommend a new rear sprocket paired up with the stock front, correct? How many teeth do you recommend on the rear?

Doing all the mods at once, that bill is going to suck. I've been running 13/45 which equals 14/48(14 stock). If you don't ride the hiway alot, or just putt around on FS trails, the 13t should be fine. Change it once a year. I ride when ever I can, so I'm looking for long wearing scenarios. The 14 may wear out just as fast, I'll let you know in a couple thousand miles.

Thanks for the info, I was just about to go ahead with the sprocket change as my first mod. I guess I'll wait and see if anyone else has had similar problems. If anyone else has more input on this subject, please let everyone know.

Oh ya, the bill does suck[:@], but I got my tax money back and can cover it. But when I get on the bike after I perform all the mods its gonna rip out from under me too.So I am going to keep my 14T front and get a new rear sprocket right? Or will the rear sprocket wear out as fast as your 13T that you put on?

Using my KLR650 as an example. Front sprocket changed about every 5000mi( using a 14t, stock 15). The rear has 38,000mi and still looks good. Steel rear sprockets last a long time, the bigger the better.

FYI, 14/45 requires a 108L chain. 14/48-49 109L. Stock is 106L

A complete chain will always have a even number of links, with the masterlink being counted as number 0 or 1xx +1. 14/48 might still work with 108, but I'd order a 110 just incase. You can remove 2 links.

My 109 is a shortened 110. The 14/48 will not work with a 108L, a full 110 stretches past the snail adjusters.

I'm sorry, I have that backwards... you can't have an even number of links. You will always have 1 extra "inner" link plus tyhe masterlink to connect the two inner links together. But anytime you change the length, you must add or remove 2 links... 1 inner link and 1 outer link.

For example the stock 106 length has 52 outer links, 53 inner links and 1 masterlink. To go to 108, you add 1 inner and 1 outerlink. I bought a 110 when I installed my new rear sprocket and removed 2 links.

So if I get my 13 T sprocket and leave the rear sprocket stock (42) then I will have a gearing of 3.23 which will be shorter then stock gearing but not as short as 3.5 gearing. With the Muzzy muffler, KDX Snorkel, Dyno Jet kit, mixed with just the 13 t gearing change, I should be able to go faster on the road with the 3.23 gearing without getting near the red in top speed of 6th gear like the 3.5 gearing would right? Was this explained properly lol?

My original stock chain should work ok with the 13-42 gears right. No need to buy a new chain right?
