13-tooth you need to do this mod!!
I finally got the oem one off and the new one on. The trick to getting the oem one off is to put your socket on the nut and give it a quick jerk and it will break right free. Of course you need someone heavy sitting on the bike in gear with the back brake on hard.
Anyways, the new power is immediately felt. It is amazing what it did for the bike. The power comes on quicker and you can actually feel it come on, kind of like a mini powerband like I'm use to. Whereas before there was no power surge, just a smooth nothing that wasn't any fun. Granted I weigh in at 150 and 5'7 I'm probably feeling more than some of you but it still helped out. The sprocket puts out no noise and was a perfect fit. I bought from dennis kirk, the XR650L sprocket is the one you need, it comes with shoulders so no spacers required. The only thing I noticed is of course you have to tighten up your chain since you lost a tooth.
Now I can't wait to get some sort of exhaust and rejet the carb and add the KX 500 intake.
One question, why do you drill out the slide hole? What's this do? thanks, Travis

Travis,
The hole you refer to is the way vacuum is presented to the area above the diaphram in the Keihin CVK40 carb. Opening up the hole that the air passes through will let the slide react more quickly to the throttle opening. A CV carb such as we have, actually does not open a butterfly valve as we are used to. Opening the throttle "allows" the slide to move up, which is how the fuel mix is presented tot he intake of the engine. Gettting that slide to move a bit quicker is one of the things you want to do.
Hope that explains it.
