Default 13/45 sprocket(s) are sweet...

Just a comment on my 13/45 sprocket install. I went riding yesterday in Houston Valley (GA) off-road area; lots of two-track and single-track stuff, up and down hills. For me, the 13/45 is perfect; I can go walking pace in 1st gear and use engine braking to go down hills. On the road, I'm at 5000 rpm at 45mph in 6th gear, so there's lots of rpm left.

Overall, the gearing made my bike so much better off-road. Kawasaki should really fit the 13/45 as standard; I think most people will use the KLX as an 80/20 dirt/street bike, and the lower gearing makes it awesome in the dirt! Now if I can only get it to loft the front-end on command...

Lance,

Did you have to change the chain, or did the stock one fit?

Where did you get your sprockets from?

Hey Marty Hows it going, The stock chain will not work you have run 109 i believe maybe 108 for it to function. I ended up going to a 14/49 3.50 from the 13/45 3.46 the noise was starting to drive me nuts. The 13 tooth allows the chain to run more on the guides 1 causing wear and 2 i was getting a chirping type sound. Since the change to the 14/49 the noise level has really dropped I will have to keep on eye on the guides to see what they do.

Whats your top speed in 6th gear with the 49 rear? And by this I mean what your comfortable cruising at on the road without the engine screaming. Something like 7,000 RPM is what I like to use for cruising speed, anything above that and it sounds like the engine is working to hard for a cruising speed for many many miles.

At 60MPH im right at 7000 Rpm,6800 RPM at 60 MPH with the 13/45 so not a huge change,I have pushed to 70 MPH but I dont recall the RPM Im not a speed demon so i run fairly close to speed limit all the time. Since i mainly run back roads it does not bother me to much.

I run little Kato @ 9k on the freeway. 9000rpm=84mph on the speedo -10%ish = a GPS 75mph with 14/48 set.

Wow you run at 9000 R's for miles and miles and it doesn't make it sound like the little demon is sceaming and about to blow up. If I go up to 8,000 it sounds like the engine is working too hard for me, well working to hard to be running for long periods at a time.
