Default 13/42 chain wear

Is anybody running just the 13 front and stock rear and chain? and if so, how long will the chain last with this set-up..the first thing I noticed that I did not like was losing the complete first half of my adjustments..I went from 3.5 to 5.5 on the adjusters when I put the 13 CS sprocket on and only got out a couple of times maybe 500km and the chain needs to be adjusted already..just curious..if it isn't going to last maybe go back to 14 CS and 45 rear and new chain..will this give me the full use of the adjusters?

How many miles did you have on the bike before you switched?

I went to a 48t rear sprocket, got a longer chain, and the only length I could get on the chain it had to be adjusted to about 6.5 on the adjusters. Don't worry about that. Because if you cut 2 links offyour chain would probably be too short.

There are 3800km on the bike now, I switched at about 3000km, there were 1200km on the bike when I bought it, adjusters at 3.5 and never had to be touched, I kept checking the chain slackeach timeI washed the bike, but it seems onceI switched that front sprocket, the chain appears to be stretching quicker...note just measured it..it's 2.25 inches, soI guess that's fine, BUT I still would like to know..will a 14/42 108 link set-up give me the full use of the adjusters? (or at least more than half?)..and I am with you..I also think that if I reach then end of adjustment, cutting even one link may make the chain too short (not too mention the chain may be too worn out to re-use anyhow and break in the middle of nowhere)

When you cut a chain, you must cut 2 links off. The inner link, and the outer link, and then join the chain backtogether. I would bet after doing that, it would be too short.

green242..i noticed you got a NS plate..where are u from?..I'm in New Glasgow...BTW the chain looked loose yesterday, maybe I was too tired, but it still looked loose today so I measured..thought for sure it would need to be tightened, but asI stated, it's at 2.25-2.30 inches..just about right..I feel stupid..but I got off backshift at 7am yesterday, didn't sleep until 9:00pm last nite

I noticed your tag! I'm from Windsor.
I'm suprised you havn't gotten more replies, seeing as most KLXers have done and reccomend the 13t mod. I have 14/48, as I said.. And my adjusters are cranked too, up to 6 or 6.5 I do belive, but I think if I cut off some links, the chain would be too short. I took the chain guard off too, and couldn't put it back on without a little modification because the adjusters almost cover up the mounting brackets for the guard.... Looks better with it off anyway.

I don't think many have replied because most of usthat have gone with the 13t are still on the original chain and don't know how long it will last.I think this is testament that the smaller sprocket with the stock chain is pretty reliable.

I think most people switch earlier in their bike's life too. If you've already got 3k8 miles on your bike, you probably need to replace both the sprockets, and the chain.
