12 volt output to power accessories
Is there a 12 volt output plug on my 06 KLX?
Where do you tap into the charging system to run accessories?
Would like to mount my Garmin GPS on the bike.

No socket on a stock bike.
I wired both the Garmin cradle and my 12v socket to the ignition switch.
(or in my case a toggle switch)
Separately fused of course.
Both after the switch so they power down when the bike is switched off.

I told a bit of a porky pie in my last post.
The truth is the b+ to the garmin cradle is wired to the switched side of the ignition switch, the brown wire and the b+ to the socket is wired to the white wire which is not switched.
Either way the ignition switch is a handy tap in point but I would suggest no more than a 100w load is plugged into the socket.

Im thinking of wiring in a cigarette lighter plug off the ignition switch. Ill check what wires are hot when the key is on with my meter.

Yeah its an awesome mod for the bike. I keep the blackberry charged in the tank bag. I added one on the wifes bike as well. Plus she got the heated hand grips.
It's also nice since the bikes can both be reversed charged with the battery maintainer. Just plug and play baby!
And bonus, I made a plug in jumper that works great. That way if someone leaves thier key on and the battery gets low, all I have to do is plug in and wait 3-5 minutes, and it will fire up the dead bike. Already tested in the garage.
And finally, I inserted this because it was close to the other picture in my photobucket account and I just think it's funny....right?
It's also nice since the bikes can both be reversed charged with the battery maintainer. Just plug and play baby!
And bonus, I made a plug in jumper that works great. That way if someone leaves thier key on and the battery gets low, all I have to do is plug in and wait 3-5 minutes, and it will fire up the dead bike. Already tested in the garage.

deej, your socket is wired to the battery or an always-hot wire, right? Otherwise, the bike wouldn't charge through the socket with the key off...I think? I like the direct wire to the battery setup personally. The power is clean, and you can use a setup like deej's to charge or almost jump start a low battery out in the field. Just use a bladed fuse in the line, and you're good to go. Switched or not is more a matter of preference, but I like the always-hot socket...no limitations.

Anyone know for sure how much overhead there is in the electrical system? I've been running a 55 watt Tourmaster heated vest on a 2009 KLX with no problems. I'd love to add heated handgrips, but I think that would be pushing it a bit. Most of the grips I've seen are 35 watts between the two of them.

As a general I wouldn't trust any of the bikes wiring to carry any more load than the device it goes too (cept may a gps) Wire to the battery and always fuse.
On some bikes I like a AB switch, for example a switch to select heated grips or heated vest, since the charging can't do em both. Have even turned off the headlight to get warm hands on bikes.
