On my 06 they recomed 91 mi. octane...i run 87 in mine and have had no problems! The reason that they say to run higher octane in these bikes is so that there is no pre ignition nock...I haven't any problems yet...but like everything else it is all personal preference...have fun with the new bike! Oh yeah welcome to kf!

Welcome to KF dude, just use 87 or higher. These are not performance bikes and the difference in price is usually less than thirty cents.

Higher octane fuel does not have any more power than the lower octane fuel. Higher octanes are used to eliminate premature detonation of the fuel (engine knock) in higher compression engines. Higher octane fuels are actually more difficult to detonate. If your engine doesn't knock, you dont need a higher octane fuel, and there is no advantage to it. Google it up

Heres my take: higher octane burns slower ~ good in higher comp engines. Using 87 instead of 91 gas burns too fast thus reducing hp developed. I found i got a little better fuel economy using 91. Enough that it was actually cheaper to run on 91! this is my case. Remember my klx is stock and my riding style is pretty tame.

heres my 2 cents...

these motors have mild compression, 87 is basicly all youll ever need.

i ride a lot of steep single track where im winding the motor out a lot, and its the desert so i have (but hate my self later for it, but then do it again the next day) riden in 100+ plus heat. knock chances are reasonably higher then, and run 89/91 when i know im going to beat on it. when it comes down to it, whats the diffrence a tank, 30 cents?
