09 KLX250s to 09 KLX250sf Instrument Cluster
I understand that converting from a 18/21 wheel setup on an S to 17/17 SF Wheel setup will cause the speedometer to read much higher than stock.
Has anyone attempted to swap instrument clusters on these bikes when converting an S to SF? Would swapping the clusters correct the discrepancy in readings in conjunction with swapping wheels?
After comparison of the speed pickup sensor, magnet and meters, the part numbers listed on Motosport.com are identical, although the SKU#'s vary.
Does anyone have any input on this situation? From a mathematical standpoint, the smaller wheel diameter would have a higher rotational coefficient than a larger diameter wheel would. Thus, causing a higher mph reading.
I've read many of your posts on the Speedo Healer and I would consider this as an alternative. My stock S reads about 5mph fast vs a GPS reading so if I were to buy the Speedo Healer, could I reprogram my speedo to correct stock readings?
Along with this, will the unit allow for storage of a secondary program for use when swapping to 17" wheels or would I need to reprogram it each time a swap is performed?
I'm sorry if I'm asking stupid questions but I've been scratching my head on this for days.. Maybe I'm over thinking it so any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the feedback.

Another less expensive option might be the Trail Tech Vapor instrument panel. Quite a few of us have been using it for quite awhile. It has more options available, a better digital temp guage, and a programmable speedo/ODO to correspond to the exact wheel/tire size you're running at any time.

Get a 12oclock labs speedo calibrater. You unplug your factory speedo sensor from the cluster, plug this into the cluster and plug the factory sensor into the calibrator. Basically it's installed in series, the quality is great, the accuracy is flawless and it's really small. The best part is you can unplug it if you want to remove it, no cutting or wiring to do. Just follow the inductions for set up, it's super easy. Honestly, from my experience I wouldn't look any where else, I'm really satisfied with their product.

i'll put in another vote for the 12oClock labs unit. I thought about the trail tech for awhile but since they don't make a true "drop in" for the KLX and I didn't really have the time to go messing with figuring out a mounting system and setting up the new pick-up on the wheel and that.

wildcard, mounting the Vapor is a cinch due to its compact size and the mounting unit it sits in. There's a huge amount of room for the unit on either the later '09+ models or the '07 and earlier models. In fact, the Vapor is sized and shaped to easily fit any bike. Nothing wrong with the 12 unit, but the Vapor is full of features at about $130 and the 12 unit is nearly $100 just to get the OEM speedo/ODO to function properly with other wheels and tires.
And considering I haven't even had the time to ride the bike in about 2 months I guess it really doesn't matter anyway...
