The 09 got updated rotors. I just picked up ddt1972's KLX650 supermoto wheel set, which he has verified fit onto the D-Tracker nicely.

I need a couple things:

1. 42t rear sprocket. I can't find them on any sites. I think the OEM is around $30. Should I just order that?

2. Rotors. Need a front and we don't think the rear 650 rotor will fit. I don't want to go putting on rotors every time I wanna change wheels. I could just order OEM for the 09 but I think I could get cheaper aftermarket ones. It's also possible that earlier model rotors will fit the 09 brakes properly. What do you think?

We've all figured out what a lot of parts from earlier models that fit the 09, but what about rotors?

EDIT: I guess technically they are not for the 09, they are for the klx650 hubs, but need to fit the 09 brakes. Hope that makes sense.

 

the front should fit, but the rear may not because the '09 rotor was enlarged so it might be too short to hit the pistons on the caliper. this is a non-scientific answer however, and one could only know for sure if you bolted the rotor on and tested it. it may hit some of the rotor as it was only enlarged some millimeters.

 

Yeah that is what I am thinking also. I think I'm just going to take off my stock rotors and try those first, then go from there.

What's the typical price on rotors? They are more expensive than I thought, a basic one going for around $150.

Also I'm fine with my 14t and 42t gearing combo right now. I'm wondering what it'll be like with these wheels and if I should go with a different setup. Highway cruising is important for me and the stock gearing works decently enough. I don't think I'd try that 15t setup on stock wheels, but I wonder what it'd be like with the smaller wheels.

Someone here has a red 09 with black rear covers and supermoto wheels, graphics removed except for the Kawasaki sticker. Also black fork guards...can't find it...where are you??

 

Well with my second set of rims i have a big rotor and your right its a pain to switch, so now I just bought a set of klx 300 rotors from Rockey mountain ATV and use them on the dirt setup and the stock ones on the 17". The rmatv ones are non floating thats why I put them on the dirt setup.

 

Duh...I didn't think of that. All this time I was thinking I need to keep the stock rotors on the stock wheels. I'm assuming the KLX300 rotors fit OK on the stock 2009 KLX250 wheels/brakes?

 

Yes, I had to open the bolt holes on the 300 front rotor 5 min. deal, back fits fine.

 

nope, absolutely not. I went down that road before when I tried installing the oem 300R rotor on my '06 KLX front hub. The 250S' rotors are countersunk or tapered holes where the bolt fits inside the hole flush. The 300's rotors holes are smaller and to fit, have to be machined larger. Not sure about the rear, they're probably the same but not sure. I know early 300R rear rotors had different cuts than the newer 300's did/do.

I can't find any aftermarket rotors for the 09. I know I can get some cheap ones somewhere....

 

Trust me from someone that has extensively modded this bike it no big deal You can open the whole and countersink five minute deal.
