Very weird oil level problem
G'Day
First question here so go easy on the kwaka noob....
2005 KL250 Stockman. Bike runs well but has been well used. Starts first time, everything works.
First job and we run into a problem. Changing the oil & filter.... only done this about 10,000 times on everything from CAT dozers to mini-bikes and everything in between.
Check the oil capacity in the provided original manual - 1.5L fully drained with a new filter. Capacity is also stamped on the case. Run bike up to temp, set it level on the stand and drain overnight. Didn't check the volume that came out - it went straight into the waste oil drum. Had noted that the oil level was a bit low when cold.
Fitted a new filter, added 1.5L of fresh oil. Can't see the level on the little round window gauge, looks over-full. Drain the fresh oil again and re-measure - amount is correct. Fill the motor again, start it and run it, and check the level. The window gauge is still showing overfull.
Drained it again and re-filled slowly to see how much it would take until the level was correct in the gauge. It took slightly less than 1 litre. There's still >0.5 litre of oil sat it the measuring jug.
How the hell is the motor showing the correct oil level in the window gauge when it's only taken two thirds of the specified oil?
Got me totally stumped. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
