RE: suspension question
The proper settings depend on your weight and riding style. Go here to get some help. http://www.sportrider.com/tech/146_0006_susp/
Get a couple of buddies to help you. Once you get the sag set correctly, 3/4th of the battle is done. After you get it set, gear up and take a screw driver with you so you can tweak the rebound and compression.
Here is something to help you along after the sag is set.

Here is a good link to setting your SAG, you must start here and then make small adjustments for your conditions. Clicky Clicky

RE: suspension question
+1^Kevin. Personally, I like my suspension a bit stiff on general riding, because it seems just right when the speedo finds its way above legal speeds. It depends alot uponthespeed range youwant the best performance from.IMHO there is no "universal" settingfor all types of riding.

RE: suspension question
Another thing, how worn out are your tires? Worn tires can make your bike handle like crap. When you get
new tires, set your suspension then. Once you get it right, you will think you are riding a brand new bike.
Both of my bikes are set up a little different. My '05 ZRX has stock suspension. It is set up for my riding in my casual attire, Draggin Jeans, mesh jacket, boots, and gloves. It is also my 2 up bike, so when I am giving a chick a ride, I have to stiffen up the pre-load on the shocks.
My '01 ZRX is my twisty bike. It has Racetech forks, AfterShocks re-built and revalved shocks, both set up for my weight and riding style. The sag is set up for me in my full leathers. When I ride it in my "casual attire" (see above) it rides a little stiff. When I have the full leathers on, I weigh about 10 lbs more, and it handles perfect.
Earlier this year my bike was not handling very well. I needed new tires and the fork oil needed to be changed. Before I went to N. Ga in June, I did all that and set the suspension back to the previous settings. I didn't get to ride it agan until I got to Ga.
After riding all week, I was worn out. I felt like I had to fight the bike through every turn. When I got home, it hit me. I had lost 25 lbs this year. I spend an hour or so on a Saturday setting the sag, geared up in my leathers, grabbed a flat head screw driver and hit one of the twisties I have here in S.W. Florida. Trust me, there aren't many.
Anyway I got it set up right, and now it feels like it's on rails going through turns. Like I said earlier, it's like riding a new bike.
Getting your suspension set properly is probably the best thing you can do to your bike.

RE: suspension question
hmm ill put my two cents in i guess, Sag is roughly 1/3 of supspension travel, a nice clean set up to start up with is 25mm plus or minus 1 mm in the rear and then from their you can easily go stiffer or harder, once you have that all done you need to see what your Free sag is, free sag should be 5-10mm, this will tell you if the spring you have on it now is too stiff or soft. after you have that done then you move onto balance, adjust the comp and rb, so that that the front and rear of the M/c fall and raise in uni.
