My ‘81 KZ 750 LTD has been rough to start for a while now. Hit the start button, you get some cranking followed by rattling and spinning sounds. Like shaking a metal can full of pebbles.
Sounds like the starter clutch, right?
I pulled the clutch and one of the springs was broken.
Replaced it and voila! Started up beautifully - - for about 6 months
Then - the same symptoms ‘till it would no longer crank. Rattle/spin, rattle spin.
Pulled the clutch again, All 3 screws that secure the clutch to the rest of the thing were loose and stripped.
Replaced them and put on plenty of locktite.
Put ‘er back together and - no luck. Hit the start button, you get some cranking followed by rattling and spinning sounds.

Any thoughts?
