Moved:

Check for cracked vacuum lines, boots, etc. first. Since it is an 89 and we are not sure on the condition of the ride. The carbs clean? The carbs synched?

Welcome to KF!

Hi, sorry but im not mechanically nor technically inclined and can only paraphrase other advice i was given when i had a similiar problem before i let it go unchecked. Basically, i was told to put my hands on the exhaust to check the pressure when starting, if there is no pressure than this suggests the valves are gone, also, on my bike the pipe connected from the carb to the air filter was loose, first one than the other and it has been suggested that too much air going through is significant in contributing to starting/running problems.Furthermore, a mechanic once told me that there is essentially 3things to getting any engine going, i recall this to be spark, fuel and i think air, though i may be wrong but essentially my mate reckons without these it wont start so check it out. If im wrong sorry and i welcome and invite anyone to correct me so i may further my small and limited knowledge on all things mechanical.thanks.

Drain the carburetor float bowls and add RXP gas treatment to the tank. Try that first.
