petrol in my oil
hi i have just stripped my carbs and cleaned them out. when i put them back together and back in the bike i started the bike, when i pulled the throttle and let go oil (i think) squirted out of the hose coming frow the engine (the one that connects tothe airbox, is this normal?
also after i put the air box back in it wouldnt start, i checked the oil and when i opened the oil cap it started pouring out. i think the petrol has mixed with the oil!!
any suggestions

Yea definately gas in your oil. Either you got a bad needle or seat. Or dirt under your needle. OR could be (depending on what bike your working on) If you have a vaccuum operated fuel petcock, it could be the diaphragm in it has a hole in it letting fuel go by easily. What bike you workin on?

Oil change time. I recommend (even though it's a PITA) turning off the petcock when you are not riding. If you don't have an inline petcock, get one. Doesn't have to be a big-dollar Pingel Hi-flow; just get something you can shut off. Never trust a vacuum petcock. My experience.....

Follow your fuel line from the tank outlet to the carbs. If there is no inline petcock, you (then) likely have a small-ish "plate"-looking thing which has fuel lines going in and coming out to the carbs. This would be the vacuum diaphragm assembly. MY GUESS would be you have a petcock on the fuel tank outlet, given your bike is a '98, but I might be wrong. Look for a squared-off threaded (on the inside; for a central screw) stud poking out of the fuel tank outlet assembly. Maybe the previous owner never used and/or took off the tap lever. If you need help, take pic(s) of the fuel outlet and post 'em here.

the petcock is on the side of the tank its got 3 positions on off and reserve.
i disconected the hose from the fuel filter, nothing came out when it was in the off position, when i turned it to on fuel came out should this happen or should it only come out when the engine is on

Yep; that's a petcock. You may still have a problem in your carb(s), but as for general rule of thumb, turn "on" petcock when you ride (before or after you start engine is OK.) Turn "off" petcock when you stop riding and turn off engine. The "vacuum" type (supposedly) functions only when the engine is running and by vacuum, opens the very thin diaphragm to allow fuel to flow. (My old H-1 2-stroke has one of these. Total PITA.) The "reserve" is there as insurance when you're getting low on fuel in the "on" position; the "reserve" will most likely get you to a station.
