Older Used Bike....HELP PLEASE!
I just bought my first bike an KZ550C 1980, and before I even ride it. I'm doing some maintenance . The guy before me had it sitting for about 8 months.
Problems:
1)The engine case is moist with oil and I can't seem to find where it is coming from.
2)When I start it up there is a low end rumbling, I think it might be timing but when I pull in the clutch (still in neutral) it goes away. I have no idea!
This is my first bike, and I'm determined to do the repairs myself. Because of the economy and there are no repair places around here!! Except dealerships.NOPE NOT HAPPENING..

Welcome to KF
Get yourself a good manual. I prefer the factory manuals over the others.
Clean up the engine, frame and basically get a good clean foundation for inspection to see where the oil residue comes from. Make sure that the oil level is correct. The clutch plates may be wore, the cable adjustment may be off. But first things first, get a manual and clean the bike.

I would/did when I bought my 1998. Drained the oil, put in new “cheap” oil. Ran it and drained it again. Then put in the good stuff. Also change the other fluids. My antifreeze was super low.
Check all seal and replace if needed. Clean & lube the chain. Check all the screws, bolts and nuts that are prone to loosen. My primary sprocket gear nut was only hand tight.
Keep it in shape & it won’t let you down. Also carry some spares with you like cable and extra levers. That way if you break something out on the trail at least you have a shoot of riding the reminder of the day
