RE: oil change
For a step-by-step, get a manual or just get in there and do it. Recommendations for oil are like opening Pandora's box;everyone has an opinion. Without naming names, I'd suggest a name-brand synthetic and a high quality filter. If I'm name-dropping, however, personally, I prefer Mobil-1 and Wix filters. Find a cross reference chart for your OEM-spec filter. Don't let some dealer rip you off for a GEN-U-WINE Kawasaki filter. It's probably made by one of the name-brand filter companies anyway. I could say more, but don't want to get an oil and filter discussion going. Those topics get beaten to death around here....

RE: oil change
I say get the K&N oil filter and try part synthetic oil at this point. Your bike will run better. your manual will tell you how to do it. you have all the tools you will need behind your passenger seat. The catsrol acteveo around here is only 5$ a quart so you should be set my friend.
