Default No spark

I have a 2000 ninja zx600 (california model)i got from a guy and he couldn't get it to run. So I have looked it over and found that everything works but there is no spark. I had the pick-up coil tested it showed 350 ohms. The shop told me that was OK. There is no spark at any of the coils so I figure they are good because the chance of all 4 being bad..... not likely. So not sure if the ECU/spark control unit is bad or what the deal is. I'm not seeing an exciter coil anywhere so not sure if it has one.Looked atall thewiring, nothing looks shorted out.

I'm lost for ideasat this point

any help would be great
thanx

there shouldn't be 4 coils on that machine..
there should be only 2. it wasn't changed (to my knowledge) from the time the E model debuted, to the time in (i think) about '02 when it was denoted as the ZZR.

anyways.. theres a coil that runs the #1 and #4 pistons, and the other runs the #2 and #3 pistons.

the same feed for the 1/4 coil runs the fuel pump.

the red wire is the signal wire fror both channels.

also gotta check (just posted this in another post..) the (possible, but more than likely) 6V feed to the CDI unit.

without this, the CDI will think the bike was hot-wired and stolen.

most ******* crooks will not know about the low-volt feed that goes to the CDI. so... the cdi HAS to have this 6 volt feed.
this connection has come off TWICE now on my 7-R.... never had it on either of my 6-E's, but doesn't mean it wasn't about to happen..

hmm interesting. I'm not sure about the coils, it looks like it has 4 coils. There are no spark plug wires (typical wire like you would find on a car) It has 4 big bulky units that plug into each spark plug, and they sure look like some sort of coil. Plus i don't see any other coil anywhere. But i could be wrong.

Thanx for the info about the 6v feed i'll look into that.

Hmm.. weird.. i think my 94 is a cali model.. pretty sure, and i've serviced the '01 before.. maybe they converted to "stick coils"..

oh.. i'm 100% sure now on that resistor.. i assumed, being that its a kawi thing, butassumed right.. little resistor in the key switch..lol

I have the 6v power to the computer. I had a guy also tell me that it could be the side stand switch. He said the bike shouldn't run if the stand is up or if the bike is in gear. But this bike will crank in any gear and even if the side stand is up or down.

?????????
stumped

it certainly shouldn't..lol

it'll only crank in gear with the clutch pulled in (switch is in parallel around neutral switch( or when clutch is out, only in neutral... well, it should, anyway. lol

i'd check the killswitch, and other switches in the "safety" circuit all again and in different positions.

it's either the CDI or something stupid like a broke switch at this point..

thanx man i appreciate the info. The kill switch is probably a good thing to check. Think i'll do that now.

well i tested the kickstand and the switch is good.

-Bike in Nuetral: cranks
-Bike in Nuetral with clutch pulled in: no crank
-Bike in gear: never cranks
-kick stand up or down: always cranks

Also got a new ecu, and that didn't work. Im still wondering at this point if maybe the pickup coil is still bad even though the shopsaid its good.

my friend, unless you personally tested it, don't trust the shop to tell ya a part is good.

trust me..

when i tear something apart for a customerand find something wrong, i immediately call them and explain it, and it they say "fix it" i do, but normally, i show them or test it in front of them, first.

you really can't trust too many places..

a new CDI with proper switches shoulda fired right up.

does the bike crank with it in gear, but clutch in?

bike in "N"... cranks..=good Neutral Safety Switch
bike in gear, no clutch=good N.S.S.
so we KNOW that one works.

bike in "N" and clutch in= bike SHOULD crank. i'm feelin the clutch switch on that one..

kill switch "off" = no crank in any gear, stand position, or clutch position.

i'd look more for spark now than cranking with a new CDI...

so.. 100% good N.S.S.
100% good KS.S
100% good killswitch

in question.. clutch switch and trigger coil.

test those bad boys.. i'm feelin the problem to be between those two at the moment now..
