Not sure if you need to take off the headers; may be a tight squeeze. However, there is a center bolt that you unscrew and it comes right off. There are two hoses (if memory serves) that will need to be disconnected. You'll want to put a drain pan underneath to catch the run-off. (May be a bit messy.) Install the replacement making sure washers, gaskets,or spacers are correct (if any; check your old assembly,) reconnect your hoses, check the oil level and add to spec. Watch for leaks or seepage upon initial start-up; don't reassemble the bodywork until you're sure you're good to go.
That's pretty much it.

You need two vise grips or clamps for the coolant lines. Just clamp them past the nipples unscrew them and unbolt the four bolts on the outside. The bolts are tricky to access with the headers installed so make sure you have a couple of sizes extensions, or even a deep socket would be very helpful.

Drag, yep; you're right. However, there is pressure inside, which would make me a little nervous if I simply patched.
Thin material or not, a good 10 minute TIG and prep? Definitely do'able for the price.
