Name that hole! I don't know what it is and its purging fuel!

still sounds to me like you have a float sticking. the fuel never should have made it to the cylinder if the float was working properly. IMO

we've all been there in a F'ed up spot with carb related stuff, i'm sure.
def a float.... i never have to shut my fuel off when shes sittin, like right now (waiting for more damn snow).. when you go to do that, make sure its not a worn (float) valve tip.. they're rubber, and after time, they get a small ring compressed into them from the seat, alowing blowby, crappy performance (due to high float level/ rich condition) and the problem you're having right now...theres less than 5 psi of fuel pressure in the system, but it doesn't take alot to blow past the float valve, and down into the cylinder..
if you get too much gas in there too fast, you can (and will) hydrolock the whole motor up...even if its one piston thats filled.. then you'll hafta remove a sparky and suck it all out, and hope theres no damage to the wristpin, skirt, and rings.
def do the double change drag was tellin ya about.. the cast aluminum these cases are made of is very porous, and theres gas thats going to be absorbed into the metal... you dont want that kaboom/ dipstick-across-the-shop experience if the gas were to ignite!! plus, gas is very, very thin.. it will not support a film strong enough to lubricate the bearings and all..

i like wo the "c" word was blanked out.. LOL
turning it on.. lets see......you gotta look good, smell good, and havealot of money.
theres an "on", "off", and "res".. the petcock is simply a valve that shuts off fuel.
it has 2 inputs and 1 output
turn it one way, (to "on") and the valve pulls fuel from a tube vertically mounted in the tank off the top of the valve body.
theres one tube thats shorter.. thats gonna be the "res" , or reserve pickup.. thus the reason you can run out of gas, but you flip the **** to this and you find about 15-30 more miles worth of fuel now...
and then theres the"off"..all carburated bikes have this function for a few reasons... service, storage, and mechanical problems..
the service end of it is if you gotta remove the tank.. its bad enough doing this, but when you have gas leaking all over the place, that REALLY suck.. trust me!!!
the storage is self-explainetory..lol just use stabilizer!!
the mechanical is usually if you have a stuck or perforated (flooded/dead) float, and you need to shut off the fuel between rides to keep the bike from flooding itself.
anyway.. sorry about the tangent.. typical of me..
so with that being said, as long as its in "on" or "res" (or "pri" on some models) you're already ready to flow fuel.
good point too, on the head gasket/ hydro lock story.. VERY good point!!
