Default Lowering

Last night I lowered my zrx 3/4" in the rear. The rex has twin shocks out back, and no one makes a lowering link, and if they did it would change the angle affecting the supension compresion. More angle increases the force needed to compress the shocks. So the stock springs are overly stiff from the factory and most people buy Olins to replace the factory ones, but Olins are 1/5" longer rasing the rear. Im 5' 3" and stand tip toe even with the front lowered a half inch. I decied to disamble the shocks and cut the springs. after disasembly they were 9" uncompresed, so I marked both at the same spot on the coil wind at 8" and cut with a hack saw in my vice. A grinder would be quicker but the heat affects the spring steel. After reasembly and instaling them on the bike the height only changed a 1/4" with bike by itself. Now with me 3/4 inch total but no gear on,and the tank is almost empty. I can almost touch flat footed now,and with the riding boots on even better.I Havent riden yet due to rain, but just watching the travel, and adjusting the rebound / compresion dampening rates seems to be much better. The shocks with no springs did damping very well all through there range of 4 clics with each one having a definate difrence rebound/compresion. I think all these stock KYB shocks need is a diffrent spring/rate to do well with out the coast of buying the higher priced shocks. The factory just makes it were the bike can accept the heaviest rider, and they dont consider the fly weights out here riding to. I will be looking into a diffrent set of springs, and even if a company here in Houston Tx. has to custom make me a pair it will be cheaper than replacement shocks. On the zrx web site some guys are using off road go cart shocks at 30 dollars a piece but have no dampening adjustment, so im thinking of buying a set for the springs only, and install them on the KYB shocks. I used hoses clamps to compres the springs for disasembly 4 total coast was 4 dollars, and reasembly they are not needed. I also lightend the shocks by 4.6 onces each so the bike lost a little over a half pound. No pics sorry dont have a digatal camrea. I might get one at tax return in a couple of weeks.

I was able to ride today 65 miles, and the ride was nice except the 45 degree part. Over all this mod did hurt the ride quilty a little but for the parking lot,and backing up it was worth it to me. I found Hyper Pro USA 1-888-963-1212 for spring replacement at a coast of $144.95. They are a progresive spring instead of a fixed rate like the stock springs. I am going to buy them in 2 weeks and will give some feed back after a few hundred miles of twistes. Also going to do RACE TECH gold valve kit in the forks at the end of the month.

Geez, and I thought that I was short. I didn't know there were other short folks out there

I'm 5'4", when my bike is up on the centre stand, I can get the ball of my foot on the ground, off the centre stand, I am pretty much flat footed. Thats one of the main reasons that I got the bike. That and the weight of it, I only weigh 125 so I needed a light bike. I have no problems moving it around. You should have seen me the first time that I had to move the bike with no one around, it was probably hilarious to see. Oh well, I did it!!!

Maybe the site should be renamed to Midgets on Motorcycles! [sm=lol.gif]

Oh well, I know what you mean c10, we might be short, but we can handle ourselves. The best part about being short.....I've never had problems with leg or head room in a car, I've never had to duck through door ways, etc.....buying pants can be a pain in the rear though, they're usually an inch or so too long!
