KZ 750 Shifting Problem

KZ 750 Shifting Problem
I am having an issue getting from neutral to second. By problem I mean it just won't go. Are there any initial trouble shooting things that can be done? Can any of the transmission parts be changed out on the bike or does the motor need to be broken down? What a way to finish out the project.

The bike is the same project bike that I have been asking carb questions about. I have not ridden it but am very close to the first test ride. I hooked up the clutch cable and put all the covers back on and last but not least the shifter lever. In the process of making sure the clutch was working I tried going through the gears while the engine was off. I could go from neutral to first and from first back to neutral but the gears are not engaging when I lift the shift lever up. The bike was a mess when i got it but i was told that mechanically it was sound. I know nothing about transmissions so I don't even know where to begin. I did start the engine and put it in first and made sure that when the clutch was released that the transmission had power. In first it pulled forward. I thought this may allow me to then shift up to second but it was the same as before. I will be devistated if I have to pull this motor to work on the tranny. you can see the project at kz750bobber.blogspot.com if you are interested.
