Trany's commonly break the mechanism that keeps it in gear, usually happens on second gear tho. Expect to pay about 800-1000 for a shop to break the tranny apart and fix it. Until you can pay the cash to get it fixed, most people drain the fluids and flush out any metal that may be left over from the break, then just skip the gear.

i'd look at the shift star. if its loose or worn, this will cause it to disengage as well..

the star will (should, anyway) be inside the clutch housing, and just under and behind it.

it could be a few things, but 3rd rarely goes out in these trans units.

inspect that shift star and keep us posted man..

as far as the 1st from neutral thing.. thats normal.. the trans has a positive neutral finder that keeps you from going into second if the bike's not moving. theres a set of 3 ball bearings inside 5th gear that move outward from the centrifugal force of rataion above a few rpm. when these bearings move out, this allows the shift drum and forks to move into second place and the ***** are locked in place from then on out.

oh.

and welcome to KF!!

yeah 1st thing is by design.

popping out of third could be worn out engagement dogs on 3rd gear or worn out star or worn shift fork in the 3rd gear track.

if its just started doing it and its the shift fork or star related you need to get it fixed before it damages the gear dogs.
