well further investigation reveals that my bike has probaly been wrecked before I got it. Today I went to take off the nut on the steering stem to remove the top plate, and once I got it off, it was stripped. the ****ing stem is stripped [:@] is it possible to use a tap/die and create new threads?

A tap/die will only fix moderately damaged threads, not completely F*cked up threads. sorry.

Time to go back to ebay[:@]

Man that sux....

You should be able to use a die to rethread it, but it will probably not be as strong. I never had to do that b4, so I don't know for sure. How on earth did the stem get stripped??

Is it a lot stripped, or a little. If most of the threads are intact, and just pulled a little, I wouldn't have a prob just "cleaning" up the threads with a die. But if it is stripped smooth, I don't know. Be kind of leary , ya know.

If you "fix" the threads, I bet it'll feel like a metric nut on a standard bolt afterwords.[:'(] Not too safe when you're on two wheels.

the threads are pretty f'ed up. Its not going to bo anywhere. both plates are clamed to the fork tubes so It won't move, but I do need it fixed asap. I LOVE EBAY. the ste is pretty thick is it possible to grink off the old threads and create new ones?

I just don't think a die will create new threads that will be strong enough for that.... If all of it was disassembled and taken to a machine shop with a re-threader, then yes.

i'll take it to a machine stop then. Once I lossen everything up on the tubes, should the stem and bottom plate just slide(with some coaxing of course) out the bottem?

Once you loosen the tubes from from the lower plate, it should slide out.

How much is a new one?
