I never noticed until tonight when watching a video clip from cycleworld that even though I have a inline 4, that it actually actualls like a parrell twin. the 2 outside pistons are the same and the 2 inside are the same. I just assumed that since it was a 4 that it ran like a normal 4banger, but it just revved alot higher. Now here is my question. my run 4 cylinders instead of 2? apperently they are doing something right for them to do it that way, but wouldn't running 2 cylinders be easier on everything? I know vtwins/parrell twins produce alot more torque, and not as much hp usually compared to a 4, but why?

What do ya mean by the same? What I'm guessing is that when you rotate the crank both 1 and 4 come up and 2 and 3 go down, if so that is how alot if not all 4 bangers are both cars and cycles.

It's all about the piston size and bore and stroke.... If you had a 4 cylinder with the same bore and stroke, same size jugs as a 1450cc v twin... Holy crap... Guessing here,, maybe around 180 ft lbs torque, 210 hp?? Of course the motor would weigh 800-900 lbs!!
If you bore your jugs, you will lose some top end, but you will gain some lower end grunt....
Don't forget about the piston return springs... Have you seen how big they are on a v twin?? Look like a coil spring off of a 78 dodge truck!! lol lol lol lol

even if two pistons are moving up and down at the same time, and the other two are moving 180 degrees from the first two also, that does not mean 2 pistons fire at the same time, then the other 2 fire at the same time. It's all about cam/valve position. when two pistons are traveling together, one might be on it's power stroke, while the other is on the intake stroke. My '81 KZ750 has two coils, and it's a four cylinder. Coil one fires cyl 1-4 at the same time, then coil two fires cyl 2-3 at the same time. it works for the reason I said about cam timing. there is no use for one of the two pistons getting a spark from the coil during each spark, but it saves kawasaki from needing four seperate coils.
I'm almost positive that bmw bikes do actually have either a twin, or 4 cyl that fires two pistons together, but that may just be a prototype.
