High idle *Problem Solved*
hi, i just took off and cleaned the carbs. after putting them back on i started it up and right when it starts up the rpms start climbing, i do not have a tach but i can tell it is idling WAY too high, as a matter of fact it keeps climbing rapidly so i have to shut it off after 5 seconds, my question is what is the proper way to fix this?
BTW my bike is a 2000 vulcan 500
i dont know how i solved this problem but when i woke up this morning i rechecked all the lines, took off the gas tank to make sure no throttle lines were mis-routed and fired her up, she idled perfect but then died about 5 min later and wouldnt start back up. one problem leads to another.

It sounds like you may have left the 'Prime' on the petcock. Some bikes had a prime on them, which I beleive is only used when the carb float bolws would be empty, like if you cleaned the carbs or drained the float bowls. If the prime is left on, it will keep sucking fuel into your engine, and fill up the crank case. I had this happen on a Suzuki already. I know the 440 LTD has this 'Prime' on the petcock. I drained the oil very frequently to get all the gas out of the engine.
Oops, thought this was about an LTD?
