Help starting a ZX-6
I'll do my introduction thing in a bit, but for now I need help. Cutting and pasting from another forum. I need help!!
The boyfriend and I took to cleaning those carbs ourselves last night. We didn't remove them, just used some carb cleaner on them and the jets, waited a half-hour, put everything back together and tried to start the bike. Note the word tried.
I don't know what went wrong. Now let me preface this by saying this bike was a piece of cake to start before this work. Never even had to choke it first thing in the morning. The bike got a new battery and new spark plugs on Saturday, just five days ago. Okie, so we tried to start the bike and it sounded like it was really close to starting up, but never did. Had a series of backfires and flames coming out of the pipe, figured we were just burning off the cleaner.
We waited a bit and tried again, this time with the choke full on . . . one big backfire and nothing . . . .
We thought maybe it was flooded so we waited till this morning and tried again. Once with no choke, once with, and NADA. One backfire with the choke on and that's it.
Anybody have any suggestions on what we've done to my baby??? No shop around here can even take a look at it until the middle of next week. Plus I'm sure loading the 430lb beast is gonna be fun when it doesn't run.

sound like the fuel mix is wrong... sounds like your putting too much fuel and fouling the plugs. did you mess with the jets?? or the mains?
Do this, go out try to start it. If it doesn't start go right to the plugs pull one out and see if it is wet??
If not what color is it??

I didn't pull the plugs, but I may have found the problem. We pulled the fuel pump and connected positive and negative leads to the battery, but it didn't do anything. Is the fuel pump dead and I've solved my issue???

Make sure you have the vacuum hoses hooked up.
Other than that, try to go back through what you did to get at the carbs. Did you remove anything?
I am sure you'll figure it out

Well we gave up on the bike. It's been at the mechanic's for three hours already. I'm gonna cry. I miss my baby. Haven't even had it a week yet . . . I just want my bike back!!!! If I have to leave it overnight, I'm not gonna be a happy camper.

Turns out it was just fouled plugs. The guy put new plugs in and she cranked right up. Tried to go for a ride tonight, but I'm just not ready to be on the streets yet. Got some braking issues to resolve within myself first, before I get in front of a car.
