Gpz 305 Starting issues
Hi
I've just bought a 94 Gpz305 ( Ok you can stop laughing now)
The previous owner had starting issues and the bike came as a non runner.
I thought I had found the problem when I noticed that the left hand carb was missing a needle jet. Following a trip to the local breakers i returned with a set of carbs to salvage usable parts from.
Needle jet replaced, I eventually get the the thing to fire up (awesome) then it dies. This pattern is repeated over several days recharging battery, cleaning carbs, swapping plugs, leads etc. Then I noticed that the left down pipe is only slightly warm but the right one is blisteringly hot.
I would like to get this thing to work myself as I have an interest in mechanical things so any help would be appreciated.

How many km on the odometer? What was done to it previously? Compression OK? Valves checked? Have you checked the spark? Fresh fuel in the tank? Carbs cleaned and floats checked?
That was my 1st bike, even before I had a car. Crossed Canada on it too!

I wouldn't laugh at a gpz305.
"Cleaning Carbs"- Everyone's definition is different it seems on that one. A fully disassembled and overnight dipped carb is my definition of a carb cleaning. check
New plugs and leads, check
A leak down test would be nice, or the compression test. Valves are easy enough to check as well. Start with all of your basics as listed above by marcham
Good luck and enjoy the project.

Thanks for the tips. I found the float had been tampered with causing the valve to stick. It starts and runs now but wont start again after being warmed up for a while. Guess I've got a lot to re-learn about engines it's been a while since I got my hands on one.

"warmed up for awhile" ?
As in enough time for the bowl to empty? Since you mentioned the float issue. I would just rebuild the carb and rule that out of the equation. Verify that you have fuel out of the petcock while you are at it. (The screens tend to get gummed as well.)
