GPX600R (1997) Project
Good evening all,
I have had a look through the forum and can’t seem to find too much on the GPX 600, and see that between this and other forums, there is mixed opinions about the bike. I am hoping that someone in here may be able to help me a little.
Towards the beginning of lockdown, I bought a 1997 GPX 600 (18,000 miles) as a project to keep me from going insane whilst stuck at home. The bloke even delivered it and told me it was one of 16 bikes her was getting rid of.
I am okay with most bits of DIY and have a bit of mechanical knowledge (happy to service cars and bikes and investigate faults etc) so thought this would be a good challenge to expand my knowledge; I was not wrong!
When I got the bike, the tank, radiator, and exhaust were not fitted; the carbs were in place but not connected at all.
I stripped all of the fairing off and then started working on from the back. The back wheel came off and was stripped down, clean, re-greased etc and that seems fine. The sub-frame and swing arm were a bit ropey, so were sanded and painted. The chain has been thoroughly cleaned and seems okay – as is the front sprocket. The rear brake was ceased (pistons), but after a lot of swearing etc and some new seals, that is all back together and on the bike. I have just taken the front brakes off today and they look in a worse state, so as well as the bits below, it will keep me busy for a while.
My plan is to put it all back together and hopefully running okay, then decide what I want to do with it; possible café style racer or improve the bits that could do with it to make it as original as possible; not really sure yet.
Anyway, I have hit a bit of a stumbling block and was hoping people on here would be able to point me in the right direction with some wise word / links / pictures etc.
I carefully took each of the carburettors apart (following the manual exactly) and realised why they weren’t attached, as someone had taken them off to clean them. They are back together and ready to fit I think…
Carb Warmers.
I went to try and fit the carbs today – which I have read can be a real pain. I sorted the cables out on the bars and then was going to fit the accelerator, decelerator and choke cable onto the carbs, when I realised that I didn’t know where the Carb Warmers system hoses went. I looked in the Haynes Manual (as per the picture) but it doesn’t really explain it; I can’t see anywhere obvious on either ends of the carbs so am a but stuck. (I have checked the Check Valve and Filter are both clean).
Am I missing something obvious?
Carbs
Because the Carbs weren’t attached when I got the bike, I don’t know where the hose were routed. For everything else I have taken off, I have taken photos and added masking tape with labels etc. There are two clear-ish hoses and two black; I am confused as to what goes to 2 outlets on the fuel tap and where the others go. On another forum, someone was talking about the t-piece that goes under the tank/over the filter – but that confused me even more as one of the hoses off of the t-piece seems to be a breather pipe don the right hand side.
Does anyone have any pictures of the correct routing?
I had to source some of the rubber flanges to go to the air box – they are not cheap ☹. I have also read that they are a pig to fit and to drop them in hot water to soften them up and make life a little bit easier. Hopefully, if I can get the carb routing issues sorted, that will be next on my list.
Tank.
The tank has a bit of rust inside and having researched various ways of getting it clean, this is on the list and I am happy with this…once it is connected properly obviously.
There are three metal outlets on the rear of the tank (as per the picture), the two right hand ones have been connected with a rubber tube – but looking at other pictures / forums – I am not convinced that is correct. I am guessing that at least one of these should be connected to hoses from the t-piece or carbs itself.
I think I may have missed something as I am sure it's not actually that complicated !!
Sorry to sound so needy, but hopefully, if someone else has experienced something like this and can help, I can carry on getting this back together and then ride it at some point in the summer.
If there is anything I have missed or that needs clarifying – please ask.
Thank you very much.
Ackers
Getting there slowly
Left hand side carb warmer - but where does it go?
Right hand side carb warmer - still not sure where to put this!
The Haynes Manual part about the carb warmers.
The red and blue dots hand been painted over (badly)
I need to get a new o-ring before fitting this again properly.
Carbs from the rear.
Carbs from the front
Some of the other bits to go back on
